Audible noise when moving my eyes

This doesn't happen always, but between 5-10 times a week I will hear (or appear to hear) a noise which vaguely sounds like someone quickly ripping a piece of paper or cloth when I move my eyes from one point to another (left to right, up to down, etc). I guess I'm just trying to figure out is this really happening, or am I suffering from some type of auditory hallucination? There doesn't seem to be any single set of circumstances it occurs in. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

My mother in law is having a similar problem.  She has she is hearing a goose or gander sound when she shifts her eyes.  She said it started one night in bed and would come and go, but has narrowed it down to shifting of her eyes.  She has seen the chiropractor, eye doc and regular doc.  No one seems to know anything.
I have much the same thing going on and am going through perimenopause as well. My best friend is an ob-gyn and says that you can have just about any kind of symptoms with perimenopause...mine is not constant, so it is manageable and it seems to me that visiting the doctor for such things usually results in no enlightenment at all, so I am going to live with it at least for awhile before seeking medical help.
I have a similar case in which my eyes make a sound when I move them left or right. I did sustain a concussion although I did not go to a doctor for that diagnosis. I actually sustained a coupe of head traumas through falling ( backwards) while skating andone falling off (down) of agravity bed thing. after the last skating mishap when I hit the cement it felt like my brain came lose and hit the back of my skull. It felt to me that I instantly sensed a fogginess inside my head, and it hasn't really gone away. Regardless, This uncomfortable brain sensation is beginning to worry me. It's like a phase shifting light saber feeling, sensation auditoy response to my moving my eyes in  any horizontal direction. I just wanted to add 'my thing' to the other comments in case somebody does come up with some definitive answers on this uneasy and worrysome condition we're suffering from. thx!
Hi all, I am responding to this post I originally wrote in June 2013. I had slowly weaned myself off of Lexapro, only to start hearing these annoying swishing sounds upon moving my eyeballs. I wanted to know from others at that time if this noise would ever go away. Well, here I am, 6 months later, reporting that while the noise remained for several months after stopping this SSRI drug, eventually and gradually it diminished. I guess I forgot about it while it was no longer bothering me for months and just came to the realization a week or so ago, that I am no longer hearing that noise anymore! I am very relieved and wanted to share my experience with others who also had or are having symptoms after stopping their antidepressant meds. Although no doctor had any idea what I was talking about, I was hopeful that maybe in time it would cease. It has. So, if you think your problem may be caused by stopping your antidepressant, I would recommend waiting patiently and maybe the same will happen for you. :-) I'm keeping clear of this class of meds from here now.
Sounds like the same noise I hear. I didn't know how to explain it, so I would say it sounds like a shutter sound. I like your description. Sure sounds the same and is really starting to worry me. I feel really weird when this happens, dizzy, light headed type thing.
I too have been hearing a swishing noise. It is about 5-8 short swishes every time I look up and to left corner. Having visual symptoms too, I went to er 3 times only this last time was anything diagnosed. The diagnoses was 80% clogged Carotid Arteries. Still being diagnosed. BUT for now...some of you may have the same problem. All doctors have stated they have never heard of this swishing in eyeball movement. But my chiropractor thought to have an ultra sound on my carotid arteries and an mra performed on my brain. Mra has not been done yet.
I have this too, it's like a clicky noise but almost like a door squeaking but not that vividly clear, I feel asif my eye is bulging out and there is pressure behind it, I think it may be due to tiredness asif it's almost a twitch , I've just searched this and it showed up, I'm lying here nearly 6 am with no sleep for about 18 hours extremely tired but unable to sleep , think this May be one effect happens to me when I've had lack of sleep or another is either to much dust intake,(from cleaning) or a sinus infection or even just a Normal cold as I have at the moment. Thanks for you time hope this helps
Note that if you come off of an antidepressant like Effexor or Prozac, this is a very common reaction. Slowly reducing the amount of the med will reduce the symptom but may not eliminate it for a while.
I have the same problem...whooshing sound when I shift my eyes to look to the right (doesn't happen when I look left) along with dizziness.  I also get light flashes in the outer corner of my right eye along with migraine headaches.  The whooshing & dizziness have been happening more often.  Occasionally I get nauseous with the dizziness, but I'm never sure if it's the dizziness or the headache causing that.  I also have the problem with tinnitus (constant high pitched buzzing in my ears that sounds like the TV was left on but the sound is off) and chronic fatigue.  Add to all of this, when I close my eyes, I see waves of color moving, almost like a lava lamp or like the music visualizer on your computer...does anyone else get that?  I am currently on Cymbalta, not weaning off of it.  I feel like I'm just a HOT MESS and my Dr. doesn't know what to do with me.  Anyone???
kdholmes: You have the same symptoms I do and after MRIs, the cardiologist's carotid artery ultrasounds, ENT doctor, internist, neurologist all ruled out everything...the allergist reccommended that I see their migraine specialist. The migraine specialist said I had "Atypical Migraines" Migraines can affect the pressure in your head, and therefore your eyes. Head pressure causes tinnitus & may cause the whooshing and dizziness. Ask for a Triptan medication to see if it makes it any better. .
this might be Superior canal dehiscence
I just started having this today and I also get dizzy and have nausea. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I thought I was going crazy.
The light saber si exactly how i describe the sound I hear when I move my eyes back and forth. Mine usually occurs after a long sleep or nap. I am narcoleptic sO I thought it might have something to do with my rapid eye movement (REM sleep which occurs when you fall into a deep sleep...Like when you are dreaming). I have a sensitivity to light when I wake up as well...and sometimes strangely enough if i turn on a light too quickly after waking up it causes me to have issues like losing my eyesight altogether for very short amounts of time(maybe 1-2 minutes sometimes less). I get very dizzy and feel like I am going to pass out and have a hard time breathing. My face gets hot and red and my eyes get bloodshot. I have been to eyes ears nose and throat docs, sleep apnea specialists, neurologists, sleep specialists...no one can diagnose. anyone else have these symptoms?
I also hear a whooshing sound with eye movement...it is not constant, but I have found that over the counter dizziness medicine, a sudfed, and 1/4 to 1/2 zanax helps with the vague dizziness that accompanies the whooshing sound!
I, and many other people have this swishing sound with eye movements, when weaning off of certain medications. For me it's Cymbalta which I take for fibromyalgia, but I also had the exact same situation a number of years ago when I was weaning off of large doses of prednisone for polymyositis. I keep referring to the noise as "tzit tzit" each time I move my eyes from left to right or up and down. Since I had the same symptoms 15 years ago and they had completely disappeared when I was completely weaned off the prednisone, I'm pretty certain that when I'm completely weaned off the Cymbalta, these crazy symptoms will disappear once again. Good luck.
