Audible noise when moving my eyes

This doesn't happen always, but between 5-10 times a week I will hear (or appear to hear) a noise which vaguely sounds like someone quickly ripping a piece of paper or cloth when I move my eyes from one point to another (left to right, up to down, etc). I guess I'm just trying to figure out is this really happening, or am I suffering from some type of auditory hallucination? There doesn't seem to be any single set of circumstances it occurs in. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

I haven't read any other posts yet as I just logged in BUT what you describe sounds like "brain shivers," a side effect commonly associated with SNRI's withdrawl. I know it's uncomfortable but it will pass in time. I was on SNRI's for a while and experienced zero personality/feelings so I switched back to the old SSRI (Prozac) and noticed almost immediately the weird feeling and sound in my head. I wish I had more info for you but rest assured it's NOT just "all in your head" as some would have you to believe. Good luck and hang in there!
Unbelievable; this swishing sound is exactly what I am experiencing. I hope it goes away, and I will not go on another antidepressant until it does go away. I weened off of Venlafaxine ER (Effexor XR) 150 mg. I took my last 37.5 mg pill a week ago after a tapering down from my highest dose at 150 mg. After having an unwanted pressure in my ears side-effect over a few weeks, I decided that the med was not worth the side effect of ear pressure. To reiterate, I only took 150 mg for 3 weeks, and my total time on Venlafaxine ER was 10 weeks, with the last 3 weeks being 150 mg. I am clean from other meds (I do not take other prescription meds), so there are no other substances that could cause the symptom. Anyway, after weening off the med completely, I have the swishing sound when moving my eyes. It is a "swish-swish" sound; up to 4 quick swish sounds when moving my eyes. Is this a withdrawal symptom and does it go away? I hope I did not cause a life-long sound in my head just by trying and then weening off this medication!
Thanks for the reply...I was not sure that this was a truly active site, but it is good to know that there are supporters out there that are actually listening. A few years back, in 2008, I tried Zoloft and quit after about a year; no problems quitting without withdrawal issues. This must be something different with these SNRI's versus SSRI's.
I think you are right as I have never had this problem with SSRI's either. The ones I've noticed are effexor, exalgo, Cymbalta and other newer meds. Unfortunately these are the ones that doctors like to prescribe these days and there haven't been enough studies on these to know the long term risks/benefits in my opinion. My hope is to be completely free of all meds and depression one day. Until then I'll stick to the old tried and tested ones :). Hope you're doing well and have a wonderful holiday!
Has anyone a cure? This is driving me insane.10 days now, help mecherry
You could try talking to your doctor about it in hopes he has a solution however when I did this they just looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about. I know from experience how scary it is but you're not alone. I think it took around a month or so for it to go away. My first thought was panic, then I realized and acknowledged what it was, then I noticed they began to occur less frequently and then they were gone. I wish there was an immediate "cure" but I found time, eating well, drinking lots of water to help flush the stuff out and rest to be the only real help.
I have MS and whenever I am at risk for a flair this is my first indication,,,, If I move my eyes from side to side I hear a sound like rubbing gritty sand near my ears. I know I am going to have a flair soon. I immediately go to doctors and get a steroid /normal saline IV. I still have to find out what started the flair... stress, UTI, fatigue. interestingly, among other symptoms, of which I didn't know where signs of impending neuro degenerative problems, were migrain headaches (Best prevented by daily asprin,) and hypothermia). When I was diagnosed with MS and began treatments I haven't had a migraine since. Suffered with them since I was 9 years old and stopped 12 years ago.
Seek out affordable care act and get a referral to a neurologist you have neurodegenerative symptoms. if you can take it increase your Vit D and Omega 3 supplements. Salmon ,gel tabs, avocado, get it in your body know the daily recommended amounts needed, but don't overtake amount needed until you are seen by a doctor. at the very least find a free clinic and have a neuro check done
Along with my weekly shot I have to take pain medications, antispasmotics VIt D, Omega 3, and Vit B 12 injection or sublingual. Don't let MDs nurses family or friends put you on a guilt trip about what you take to help you to function normally. Its better than being wheelchair bound, tube fed and wearing diapers. Dr.s will assume you are drug seeking especially if you are a person of color.
Thankyou this helps . I was taking sertraline for about 5 years . I started getting swishing noises moving my eyes. bad vertigo once but dizzy foggy feeling 24 /7 . I decided after the doctors could find the problem I stopped the sertraline slowly . If been off completely for about 1 week but still have the swishing noises and still little dizzy and foggy brain feeling . I'm hoping that stopping the medication will curse the problem. Boy I sure hope it doesn't take months or years .I would rather die than deal with this much longer .
I actually had this problem about 1.5 years before starting on sertraline. I seem to get my symptoms whenever I am tired, physically or mentally stressed. It rapidly improves when I am relaxed, at home, away from the office and any stressful situation. I have had many tests and nothing found so it's just something I have to try to control. But meantime, as I have to go outside of my home for work etc., etc., I have to put up with it; makes it horrible dealing with everyday situations such as walking amongst people, crossing the road, waiting for the train; if I keep my eyes focused on one direction only it's ok, but as soon as I start looking around, the dizziness starts (not quite dizziness but I just don't know how else to explain it - I guess it's more like vertigo, and this 'camera shutter like feeling and vision'). It's a very strange thing. (And for the record I'm 50 this year and pre-menopausal, been on Sertraline for anxiety for 2 years now.)
Hi, have had similar issues. My "noise" however, started before I was put on any anti depressant. I'm on venlafaxine now, propranolol and lamotrigine. Like you, i find, if I miss the venlafaxine it starts up again with avengence, but as soon as I start taking it again, magic, it's gone. Not looking forward to coming off this drug (know I will do eventually) if I can look forward to, in my case, severe disorientation, dizziness and nausea. Oh, and the annoying noises. Good luck to all
This cannot be related to any meds, or only rrelated to any meds, I am 45 and have had this issue for years and have never taken anything other than a seldom needed advil.
I agree, I've had this since before I started taking anti-depressants; and as I never miss a tablet, my symptoms are not therefore related. I find if I can keep my eyes straight, up or down, it's okay - just moving them to left or right creates the symptoms and feelings of vertigo.
I only get this if I have blocked sinus. Usually after a cold or if I have flu
