I had a second Mirena placed after my next son was born and had it for 1.5 yrs until Dh and I were "celebrating" our anniversary and the next day I had horrid cramps all day. When I woke up the day after I felt fine and took a bath and checked my Mirena strings and the whole thing was in my hand. It has been 4 days since it came out (but 5 if I were to assume that it was not in place Sunday) and I've had no spotting, bleeding or other changes to date. I'm moderately concerned I may be pg but will wait for at least a few weeks to test- I refuse to take bc pills and have told dh we'll be using condoms until he gets "fixed" (which was supposed to have happened by now). I'd get another but I'm pretty much done with it- I'd like a 3rd and dh not so I've basically put the ball in his court.
For people considering it I'd say my experience with it (except the whole falling out thing) was pretty positive compared to my prior experiences with bc pills (which did for me cause acne, weight gain and severe loss of sex drive- dh called them "abstinence pills"). My only complaint about the Mirena would be a "fluttering" feeling (similar to early baby movements) that it caused- but no cramps, pains, weight gain, mood swings or other negatives I've heard others have experienced. I do agree with comments I've read here and elsewhere about the medical community refusing to accept/admit that there are issues with Mirena and resistance at removing it for complaints pertaining to Mirena side-effects.
Heads up....YES it can fall out on it's own!!!! My daughter got the Mirena two years ago and has suffered depression, mood swings, chronic vomiting and severe abdominal cramps! It gets worse...she was suffering severe abdominal cramps with a fever so I took her to the ER. After blood work was taken it was discovered that she was pregnant and her WBC count was doubled. She is now going through testing because the Mirena cannot be found and she may be suffering from an ectopic pregnancy or a dislodged Mirena that may have embedded into the wall of her uterus! I am praying that she gets through this without losing a fallopian tube....but it is a huge possibility! PLEASE....PLEASE....PLEASE.....choose a safer, more reliable form of birth control!
I have had my mirena for 16 months. I love it. Around the time it was placed, I had started weight watchers so I don't know if it would have made me gain weight but I lost 5 pounds immediately and I thought that was because I stopped taking the pill. I have not had a period in about a year. My sister has one too and we both complain about oily complexions and pimples that hurt really bad.
This week I have been really nauseated at work and my sense of smell is unusually high like when I was pregnant. Smells at work do not bother me and this week it did. Just to be sure, I took a test and it was negative. I checked for my strings and I can't feel them. They were there about 3 months ago. I can feel a bump, but it's not exposed. Called the dr. and the nurse told me that after so long the strings coil up and you may not be able to feel them. The bump I'm feeling should be the knot of the mirena. She did not seem concerned enough to schedule an ultrasound. She said I would know if it would have fallen out. I don't know. I guess we will see.
I've had my IUD for a little over 3 yrs now, and Ive had no complications. I love it because I am extremely fertile ( 3 children, back to back on the pill with 2 of them)..anyway, umm like 2 days ago I was urinatng and I sneezed exceptionally hard, and ever since, Ive had pains down there like something is scratching me. Ive also felt contraction like pains in my lower abdomin except they were much much worse than labor.......Does that mean my mirena is falling out or is already out....I am going to consult my doc but just looking for other opinions first.........
PS-I didnt check the toilet when it happened bc I did have that pain immediately nor did I think a SNEEZE would have this type of effect.....
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
Hi. I've had Mirena since October; it's now December. After the insertion, my doctor told me to wait at least four days before having intercourse. Also, after the insertion, I started to have painful cramps. I asked my doctor how long the cramps would last and he replied with, "About five minutes, ten tops." Until the next morning, the cramps stayed steady.
Now, I've been cramping for the past day and 1/2, I've been concerned that the Mirena is falling out so I went to the Ladies Room to check and low 7 behold, I could feel the strings. I called my doctor immediately and I was told to come in asap.
I wouldn't advise any one to get the mirena. As far as the experience I've had with it, its horrible. Period. Dot. End of story.
Can anyone give me info about having the Mirena removed? Does it hurt? Will I be in pain for several hours like I was after the INSERTION?
