It could be your kidneys hurting from dehydration...

This Hodgkins thing has me thinking as I too have unbearable lower back pain after drinking. Now I have lower back pain even when I don't drink half of the time for over a year now.

The question is ..... I know an oncologist treats Hodgekins disease but what kind of specialist should one see to diagnose whether or not Hodgkins is the underlying problem ?

I've been drinking for almost 10 yrs. Just this past year I have been getting really bad back pain after drinking.Yesterday I only had 1 glass of wine and the pain was the worst I've experienced yet. It kept me up all night. Usually if I squeeze my side and back really hard the pain goes away for as long as I can hold it. This time it didn't help one bit. I've googled "side pain after consuming alcohol" and "back pain after consuming alcohol"... and have only seen this blog and some sites about cancer.

I have been drinking beer as long as I can remember. Ever since I've hurt my back and gained weight I have been having back pain after I drink beer. I have been complaining to doctors for years and even told them about the drinking. They have no idea and just blame it on the old injury.

I really wish someone helps diagnose this condition. I have been drinking beer as long as I can remember. My great granny would give me a Miller Pony beer on Sunday with my Gumbo. I joined the Marines at 17 and really started to put away beer daily. I never had any health problems from drinking. One day while drinking and doing my "honey do" list my back began to hurt. The next day I could barely walk, sneeze, or have a bowel movement without tears and moans. Talk about a whimp who was once a lean mean fighting machine. I must agree about the urinating easing the pain a little. The scary part for me is I lost my brother to kidney failure and he drank as much if not more beer than I do. I have also noticed that I can put away several beers and never need to urinate for quite some time. Not like in the past where 2 beers and I was going and maybe with a buzz to urinate. I know my body has slowed down with age, but what gives with the holding of urine? I drank a lot of bottled water and instantly got back pain once while working outside. I think this might just be my mind playing tricks. But the pain is real!

I too had this for a few years until I ended up in the ER. I was in so much pain it was far worse than childbirth, I was also vomiting until I started vomiting bloody pieces of god knows what. My ureter at the base of my kidney had narrowed almost completely so my kidney had been filling unable to drain. The urologist on call that night asked me if it had hurt when I drank beer. I couldn't believe it. I finally found a doctor who knew. He said beer filters faster so it caused more pain. I ended up with a stent then surgery. Pyloplasty on my right ureter, a scar that goes across my side from my belly button to my back. They had to do exploratory surgery. They think it was congenital, but don't know. Now my kidney works great, no more pain with drinking. I just wish more doctors could have this information. So if you have pain in your lower back on one side go to a urologist, get an IVP. My doctors said they had heard of no relation between kidney pain and drinking alcohol. My internist kept referring me to chiropractors, osteopaths, you name it. When I asked to see a urologist he laughed and said it couldn't be my kidney. Finally the bone doctor he referred me to told me to just go out of the HMO and pay out of pocket and see a urologist. I was planning to do that, but that weekend I ended up in the ER.

It could be kidney pain. Drink lots of water before and after drinking alcohol and you may feel better.

I have had pain so bad in my back right around the rib cage area and below after drinking just one drink. the pain usually does not start untill 2 days later. The pain usually wakes me up in the middle of the night sleeping and I have had to get out of bed because laying in bed worsens the pain. The pain in my back will continue for a couple of nights and then the pain goes away. Now looking back at my past I have always felt moderate pain in my shoulders and my neck within a minute or 2 after drinking any type of hard alcohol. the pain usually last for 5 to 15 min.
I think consuning alcohol in for some people actually may cause some type of inflamation of the kidneys.
I was refered to a nephrologist( Kidney specialist) about 13 years ago after I had problems while pregnant with my last son I had my son prematurely due to toxemia similar to proteinuria. Excess protein loss. The Nephrologist said I just lose protien in my body and I probaly was born with a defect in my kidneys filtering systom that processes protein and not to worry about it.
I would just need to keep getting my urine checked periodically. I asked the nephrologist about the pain I have felt after having one drink. The Nephrologist looked at me weird and said she had never heard anyone complaining of my symptoms and she did not think it was kidney related.
About 5 years ago right before moving to Oregon I started feeling pain again in my back and up under my ribcage My Dr. ran some tests and found my gallbaldder was functioning at 7%. and I had a kidney stone on my left side and I had a big cyst close to my ovaries. I had surgery and they removed my gallbladder and also did surgery at the same time to remove the cyst. The cyst was gone. but the Dr said they found alot of scar tissue from previous c-sections around my bladder and around my ovary. They removed the excess scar tissue.
2 years ago I was refered to nephrologist because my protein levels in my blood and urine were high. This nephrologist prescribed me a ace inhibitor blood pressure medicine to regulate the blood flow through my kidneys. The nephrologist said I would need to have renal functioning tests done periodically throughout my life and that if protein levels got higher I would probally need to have kidney biopsy done. I asked my Nephrologist about the pain I have felt after drinking any alcohol. even a small amount. She also said she had never heard of anyone having symptoms like that and she did not know of any kidney disease that had those tpe of symptoms..
Last october my Nephrologist called me and said the recent renal function tests and other tests have shown my protein loss /creatinine was high and I would need to have a kidney biopsy done to find out what is going on with my kidneys. I had the needle biopsy done on my left kidney a couple of days later. I spent the night at the hopsital for observation and then release the next day. I was in lot of pain. i could barely walk . I was told I would feel discomfort by my Nephrologist. she gave me some pain killers and sent me home. I was in excruciating pain. i could not laugh or move to fast .After being in pain for 5 days I called Nephrologist many times and finally she said go to the emergency dept. My husband took me and I was admitted to the emergency dept. afterhaving test run and a cat scan they found a huge Hematoma in and around my kidney. One of the risks of having a needle biopsy. I was out of work for almost 2 months ... My Nephrologist told me the biopsy results showed no cancer but that I did have a rare kidney disease called minimal change disease. She said it is usually only found in children. I asked her if this disease would cause me to be in pain all the time and she said no . She put me on 120 MG of prednisone and upped my blood pressure medicine So I started doing my own research and started looking online to find out why i was still in pain. I found this site after checking out numerous others and put in my symptoms on google it came up with this website under the category LOIN PAIN HEMATURIA SYNDROME
At my last visit to my Nephrologist told me my disease is so rare there is not enough information about it online or anywhere. My Nephrologist said are treating me like I have Focal Segental Glomerulosclerosis disease because they don't have enough information about Minimal change Diseasedisease. Recently my older sister has been diagnosed as having Lupus which has similar symptoms. I informed my Nephrologist of this information and she said that I do not have Lupus and that i was tested for it as part of the biopsy I had done. Maybe this is part of another disease . I dont know but I am still going to do my own research and hopefully find more people who are experiencing similar experiences and possible building a support system online. I do not drink any alcohol any more. I miss it mainly when I am with friends or my husband and they are drinking wine with dinner and I have to drink sprite or grape juice.
I still would rather drink sprite or juice than endure the pain i have felt after drinking alcohol.

Hi, I have been searching for answers to this question myself. The only difference is that I am not a heavy drinker, in fact I might drink one glass of wine a year. And I don't really like it that much, unless it is a wine cooler - but the lower back pain is so bad that I couldn't finish the glass if I wanted to! After going out to dinner and taking a sip of my sister's wine the other night, and immediately feeling that awful pain, I decided I'd better try to figure it out.

Just posting this here so everyone knows its not just heavy drinkers who have this reaction. I'm going to look up the tips from everyone now.
Thanks for posting.

I have had this same type of pain after drinking as well. Mine started 3 years ago after having a wine cooler. Intense spinal pain occured and lasted for 30-45 minutes. I never drank that much in the first place, but since it was close to my birthday, I had 2 more occasions over another couple of weeks where I tried to drink part of a drink, and it did the same thing.

I have since gone on to not drink any alcohol; but the pain from the 3rd and final drink never really went away. It is still there now and has remained... with varying intensity over the past 3 years.

I do not have any answers to why this happened, or what is going on; but would be quite interested to know if anyone figures it out!

Hey,

Reading through these replies and the links to Hodgkins is really confusing. There seems to be two issues here.

1) People who drink and get this pain while drinking. These people should see a doctor straight away and push the Hodgkins thing because one of the links there said this direct, instant pain is a rare sign of the disease.

2) People who drink and have no pain that night, but wake up the next morning with lower back pain. Nobody here seems to have put a better explaination of this forward other than dehydration which could cause it but that would seem a little too vague as everytime I drink I know I get dehydrated but this lower back pain is not as frequent as the dehydration...
