i have had pain on both 'flanks' after boozing consistently. i went to a bunch of ny doctors and had responses similar to others ... blood test ok, no gall stones. i did have a latent kidney stone on one side, however, so the doctor prescribed potassium citrate to dissolve the uric-acid stone (diff from calcium stones... uric acid stones show up from dehydration, ie, boozing). anyway, i've found that if i take the potassium religiously, about 4g/day, for a couple days, even while i continue boozing, the pain goes away. this does NOT mean the liver damage is diminished, but it does seem to help the pain. I've also noticed that the pain is related to bowel action. if i can have a couple cups of coffee to get things moving, the pain is immediately reduced. so, there are two real world suggestions. if we all kill our livers, we're screwed anyway, but these two things seem to reduce the pain along the way.
