sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

I have had these same systems now for the last 5 days, I just started using Alka-Seltzer Plus for cold and it seems to be helping..=)
Hi all, Im 32, male and having occassional pangs above my right ear, I'm guessing it is nerve related? For the last couple of weeks I have also had upper chest and shoulder pressures and pains (both sides but mainly right side), fairly mild but a bit concerning. I do suffer from a digestive disorder, so lower chest pain and headaches are fairly common for me. The Dr sent me for a neck xray, saying something about a disc could be out? I will have a follow up apt next week. Also, I wanted to mention, about a year ago I had terrible frequent (at its worst several per minute) pangs behind my right ear for about a week. It was really terrible, each pang was extremely painful, luckily they reduced (in intensity and frequency) with antiinflamitories. I saw the Dr and he said i may have an infection or something in my mastoid (its the bone above my ear), he gave me some antibiotics and it got better in a few days. The pain have now is much less frequent and feels like its in the the righs side of head rather than above my right ear, however similar pang sensation.
Thanks so much for the informatiom
I've had this pain since two days ago, for me it doesn't hurt that much, but it does hurt enough to surprise me, it seems to come multiple times in a minute. I'm a seventeen year old female and I'm scare that this can be a bigger issue.
same here i feel my head is soooooooooooo heavy from right iam 19 only
thank you, you have been a huge help. it is so nice to know others have this and that i am not going to have a stroke or something.
People! The answer is poor health due to lethargy, bad diet, and being overweight. If you are not exercising AT LEAST 5 times a week for an hour or more, your headaches and joint aches and so on and on and ON are due to your Typical American Blubber-Dub lifestyle.
For those that suggested Trigeminal Neuralgia, I can tell you it isn't. If you think it's nerve related you should check out some images of Nerve mapping. The T nerve has three branches across each side of your face (a left and right). It does not wrap around the back of your head. The occipital nerve covers the back of your head in two branches. I have Trigeminal Neuralgia, and wouldn't wish it on anyone. Nerve pain is like nothing you should ever have to deal with. The best advice that anyone should give you is, "GO TO YOUR DOCTOR". Self diagnosing shouldn't be your primary method of diagnosing. You don't know any of us, and I'm assuming that none of us have degrees as a doc.
When you have headaches or pain in your head, dull or otherwise, and there's no explanation, be sure to include a visit to the dentist. When I was 16-17, I had some severe headaches. I had lots of tests. They would come for a few days, be excruitiating, the pain varied from sharp to dull. I would be okay for awhile and then they would start again and more tests. I literally "had my head examined", as well as upper/lower GI's xrays, scans, bloodwork. I took lots of aspirin, started having problems with my stomach because of that. Doctor finally put me on Darvon. When I was almost 18, my mom took me into the dentist - she wasn't very good about the annual checkup thing. My dentist was her dentist that she'd been going to since she was my age. When he looked at my xrays, he said to her, "It's been three years. I told you she'd need to get those wisdom teeth out within a year." At that moment, the light bulb clicked on and we both realized that was probably what had been causing the headaches, because they were all coming in at an angle and partially under the molars in front of them. Sure enough, once the molars were removed the headaches stopped. Medical doctors rarely think of dental problems when people talk about headaches. A cavity, an abscess, or even minor problems can result in headaches. And no, I'm not a dentist nor am I related to a dentist...I still don't like going to the dentist. :-)
My father is 75, he lost his hearing about 10 yrs ago in his right ear. He had a tumour at the base of his skull which caused this. The tumour was treated by laser and shrunk and is no longer there. My Dad has been experiencing severe shooting pains at the base of his skull, his neck, right ear and shoulder. This pain alternates between the head and ear every few minutes or so and lasts for a few seconds. It seems to be worse when he is active - just walking around even. He recently had an MRI scan at the Neurologist who confirmed there is no cancer, the tumour has gone but he diagnosed arthritis of the neck and sent him away with painkillers and advised he takes Omega 3. We have now made an appointment for him to see a Rheumatologist later this week. I hate seeing him suffer like this and wish we could find some way of relieving his pain and confirminng what is actually wrong with him. The not knowing is very hard to deal with and he is becoming depressed and tired of being in pain and limited as to what he can do. I welcome any advise or info anyone can give me.
Omg! I'm happy to know i am not the only person in the world suffering from sharp pains in my head and behinde my right ear. I am layed off with no medical insurance, I was hoping I didnt have a brain tumor. I do feel a little better after reading the articles I hope it's just stress.
i have been feeling much of this same pain for some time.i dont know for sure but ive been searching for an answer also like so many.i have found somthing on the internet that is matching up to everything ive been feeling.maybe all of you might want to read into it.i found it at ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed take a look at all the symptoms.i knew nothing about kundalini until i started having all of my pain and tried to find out what was going on,and doctors could not help me.
This may not be of any help to anybody, but reading through these theads sure did help me. Im 23 years of age and about 2 weeks ago i felt these weird sharp striking pains behind my right ear. It would be on and off every 20 minutes or so, and lasted about a day and a half. Ive experienced shap pain before but never that painful, Id be teaching in class and id actually have to stop for those few seconds it was on. Today it came back, however i would scale the pain 20% less than last time. I guess if all of u have been to your local GP and came up with nothing i dont see a point. Maybe it is stress related??
I started getting sharp outbursts of pain behing my right ear, the pain spreads down my right arm and makes it difficult to move my shoulder! I taught it was because I lifted something heavy or the likes but whenever I touch my head behind my ear it feels as if its bruised? I didnt hit my head or cause any stress to my body? Do I just hope it goes away and not have to pay 55euro for the doctor? After reading all your posts it doesnt seem that your visit to the doctor did any good?!
I get the pain on the same ear that I use my cell phone on. Seems the pain is worse when I'm on my cell phone.
