sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
In reply to the original post... I certainly don't have all the answers, but I know that my husband and I both suffer from TMJ (Temporo Mandibular Joint) issues with our jaws. You may want to look in to this. The only problem is.. finding a dentist that can will pay attention to that and also use the proper methods for correcting it, not just handing you a mouth guard. TMJ can wreak havoc on many different parts of the body including the teeth, jaw, head, neck, back, eyes, face, you name it. A dentist we we had the GREAT fortune of finding in Cleveland, OH believes that a large number of the population has this problem due to the way their bite may be "off" and then the jaw compensates for this by you unconsciously moving it around to find a comfortable place to let it rest. This is my best guess. I hope it helps and I hope you find the answers you are looking for soon. :-)

I have just started getting a sharp pain on the right side of my head and behind my right ear. I would be interested in have someone throw some light on this. The pain is short and sharp, rather like a sharp jolt. When I touch the top or right side of my head the pain feels similar to the feeling one gets if hair has lay in the wrong direction for a time. It seems more predominant at night and is strong enough to wake me.

Sharp pain on the side of the head might be a symptom of a herpes zoster (Shingles) outbreak on the nerve. My wife had a headache for several days starting from the back of the head progressing over the right temple and side of head and up to the face. Had an MRI and nothing. Doctor suggested that it might be Shingles and we said no way. Sure enough the next day small little vesicles showed up on her eyelid.

You on all the psych meds, Sounds like your over medicated. Vyvance is actually a grade D long acting amphetimine. My son takes it and does very well. Adderal is amphetimine salts, they are simular drugs. That is quite a veriety . Why Geodon? There are newer meds to treat psychosis. Are you bi-polar, why stimulents, that would agrivate the psycosis and/or mood swings. Zyprexa or resperidone have been proven to work better. To many or the wrong combo of meds could definately cause a headache. Good luck.
Sounds like Trigeminal Neurolgia. my dad was diagnosed with this.
Having the same problem today, its right above my left ear, seems to be worse when im on the phone.
I feel the same thing. I am a 20-year-old dude. So I have this pain up to now and like 2 days ago I had a check up. The doctor said that it's because of caffeine. So she gave me a regulation which is at most 2 cups a day. She said that caffeine causes the sharp tingling pain that last only for a split second and then comes back without a warning. I don't know what to. I'm still hurting.
I have been getting sharp, sudden pains above my left ear. Been on and off for 3 days now. There is no warning for them and pain killers don't seem to help at all. When they come it feels as if something is trying to push it's way out of my head from behind my ear and out of my left eye. I have a DR's app tomorrow, just wandered if anyone had experienced the same at all!!
I am having sharp pain on my left ear. it lasts a second in every few seconds. I just put my warm hand on my left ear for few minutes, found out pain is less frequency. Just want to post it out to share with everybody had same problem.
Hello - I have had a pain off and on over my right ear and sometimes a little bit over my left ear. I also have a clicking sound in my ear. I haven't had any perscriptions for it yet. I was worried that it might be a tumor. But judging from a lot of these responses, I am thinking it is sinus related. This has been a bad year for sinus infections. I had two very painful ones and a cough. The air has been full of pollens and such. The doctor had said that with sinus infections, sometimes the mucus is pushed further back into the tubes and I guess he means in the head. I didn't quite understand. I guess I will go back and ask again. The fact that the same ear is clicking too, I think he is probably right. Also, how is it that all of you have had the same or simular problem? It must be allergy related.
I have the same problem!
Have had the same exact stabbing pain in the back of my head since I was a young child, as long as I can remember. I am 36 now. Don't worry about it. As soon as you forget abou it, it will go away.
Twenty-four hours after I had a tooth extracted from my
right jaw, I began to have the stabbing pain above my right ear and tenderness that
you all are describing. I did a Google
search and found this discussion. I
figured that somewhere on here I’d find the answer. But like most of you I didn’t find the answer
for me.
Since I knew that I’d just had dental work, I put
two-and-two together and concluded that it must have something to do with the tooth
extraction. Now it’s about a week later
and my pain has all but disappeared. I
believe the problem was inflammation irritating the nerve that goes behind my
ear up to the area above the ear; and it has now cleared due to my effort to eliminate
the infection (used several drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract [GSE] on a tooth
brush as well as a little dab of toothpaste, several times a day).
For those of you who may relate to my experience, I’d
suggest you look at your dental health first.
If you’ve had teeth pulled, gum disease, or any root channel teeth then
you should see a good biological dentist.
They now have a device that can do an ultrasonic scan of your teeth and
gums. It will show any cavitation that
might be present. There may be hidden
infection in these gum/bone cavities that needs to be addressed; or the root
channel is harboring a lot of toxins.
Good luck.
Hey im 21 and basically exact same thing started happening to me yesterday! i went and saw the uni nurse she said the like sharp pains are caused with the blood pumping through which cause the sharp pains... i dont know how true that is because then it would be happening all the time where as mine are kinda spread out but all equally as painful! i had a fever last night and was in tears with the pain on the left side behind my ear but slightly higher as someone else said it feels like im being stabbed in the brain every time!...
I am having the same pain. it's behind my right ear on my neck. If you press on that spot it hurts and the pain shoots up the back of my head and to the front of my head. I went to the DR. yesterday and he said I have a sinus infection and gave me an antibiotic. He told me to take tylenol so I am taking 650mg of tylenol 3 times a day and it's not helping. He said my lymphnodes were swollen too and my eyelids are swollen slightly. Should I use a cold or hot compress on that area behibd my ear for relief? I am not stuffy and nothing seems to be draining from my nose. I use the nettie pot too. If this pain persists by Wednesday then I am going back to the Dr. I do not have a fever.
