sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
decpro350, I appreciate the effort you TRIED to make. What a pity your email address was not allowed. I too would love to see a gathering of symptoms/causes.
My pain started yesterday. DIrectly behind my right ear. Intermittent stabbing pain...every 1-2 minutes, but sometimes longer breaks. I would really like to know what is causing this--is it muscular, because my neck/shoulder does ache a little when massaged. On the other hand, I've been putting liquid "Neutralizer" in my ear so maybe I developed an infection. Finally today I took an aspirin. It's now almost an hour and I'm still getting the pains, altho somewhat less intense.
It could also be, as suggested by one poster, due to wearing glasses. I'm just curious as to the intervals between the pain and what determines the length.
I also get occasional similar pains in different areas of my torso, such as below my left armpit and below my right shoulder blade. Intermittent pulses of pain that will last 1-2 days then go away. Mysterious!
If you are gathering info, decpro350, please think of a way we could find you.

Hi all, I'm 63 and have had this sort of pain off and on since I was in my late 20's. Just above the right ear I can feel a group of nerves or tendons not sure which, they become inflamed and swollen. The pain has gotten worse over the years. I'm convinced that it is nerves, or rather nerve damage resulting from a car wreck back when I was about 26. I have lots of scar tissue on the left side of the spine in my neck....major stress seems to bring on the swelling, and then comes the pain above and behind the right ear. It is so intense at times, I would consider most any remedy. I rely on pain pills as well, they just don't get there fast enough.

it could be a problem with your mastoid muscle. It can cause all sorts of problems when too tight.
Hey, I think you might have solved my problem. I started having the electrical impulse pain behind my left ear along with other abnormal sensations in my left temple and neck (all vascular except for the impulse shock). I started taking B12 Monday. I will stop taking it and see if it all stops. Thanks again for your clear insight.
I have had this since I was a child, as do my mother, sister, brothers and my son. I am now almost 50. I do not take vitamins, my mother who is now almost 70 had never taken vitamins until recently. I have gone 10 years without an incident and then all of a sudden out of the blue it hits me, sometimes lasting hours, and sometimes up to a week. No Dr. has ever been able to help, however I was prescribed Neurontin, and after 2 doses, I was relieved and discontinued the meds, until I had another incident. I do tend to clench my jaw at night, and this incident now, I have new pinched nerve on the other side of my neck, so I have been leaning more to one side, and seems to have brought on another onslaught.
Hi, I am suffering from right side headache/facial pain since last 6 years. Let me describe my condition in detail.
It all started with my right side of the head getting jammed or stiff some sort of starting from the right lower neck, going through the back side of the right ear, reaching the head and then directed towards my right ear. It is like C shape in entire. In the beginning it used to pain 24/7 and felt like some nerve or blood flow is getting blocked somewhere behind the right ear causing the jamming and the pain. It was so suffocating that it became completelty difficult to live with this suffering. There was pain only on the right side, behind the ear, right neck, reaching till right eye.
Went through almost all the big hospitals from north of india to south of india. Major disappointments came from wellknown hospitals in mumbai and bangalore where i thought the neurologists will be world class. But none were able to properly diagnose the problem via various CT scans and MRI, instead they started creating stories and told me that i was assuming that i am having pain on the right side. But trust me folks, i have benn suffering.
I will list various symptoms which my fellow beings can relate with theirs:
1) Stiffness in the right side of the neck. If i rotate the neck on the right side, it starts paining.
2) The neck line which causes stiffness reaches at the back of the right ear and it feels like something is blocking my ear from the inside and mostly on the backside. That causes pain as well.
3) The blocking/jamming line reaches the top of the head. The entire line from the back of the right ear and the top of the right head pains like hell as if the nerve has been crushed or getting jammed or pinched. This jamming results not only in right side headache but it feels as the whole of right head is blocked.
4) The jamming from the right side on the top of the head reaches the right eye as if the nerve which passes from behind the right ear, reaching the top of the head and then taking a left turn to affect my eye. Believe me, my eye sight is completely clear and there is no propblem as i have got it checked like thousands of time.
5) Once it reaches my right eye, i feel numbness around that area and pain on the back of my eye ball as if the entire area or the line which is described in my above points is getting some sort of pull originating from the back of the right side of the neck. And that entire line bloody pains like hell.
6) Cold and cough increases the problem more.
I have got myself checked for Sinus, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Facial Pain, Muscle contraction on the right neck, possibility of tumor, ear infection, Migranie, ... but none of them was diagnosed positive. But still the pain is there.

My condition is bit allergic to cold and stuff as well. The jamming and the pain increases if i drink anything realted to cold or ice like cold drink or ice cream or curd. And yes, my pain stays 24/7, the intensity of the pain differs time to time.

Paras
I was having the same pains and was diagnosed with Ocipital neuropathy. It is caused by the Ocipital nerve being pinched. Other than having surgery to release the nerve, there is not much that can be done about it. I was in a car accident where I sustained a neck injury, after 3 cervical fusions, the pain and the headaches are still very common, even though my fusion is complete.
I hope this helps you all!!
Hello everyone
i have the same pain but mine is on the left side and above my left ear, on friday it went to my neck and straight to the heart i had to get someone to rub me on my shoulder to make the pain go away...and i was left with a red mark like i had a scratch behind my left ear...
Hi I'm a 17 year d girl and I get this exact same pain but on my left side behind my ear it like a really bad shooting pain it goes up to my temple or sometimes down to my neck, I suffer from health anexity anyway so this is really worrying me because I've had it on & off for about. 6 weeks now some days I don't get it atall others I get it alot throughout the day can anyone help out my mind at rest? Thanks xx
I've been having similiar headaches also. It comes without notice, moves from side to side, usually behind my ears. Sometimes it feels like I have an ear infection. Today since 10an 8/22/13 it happened three times, even happening now as I type this comment. It stated out weekly, then almost daily, and today 3 times already. Do you think I'm getting a stroke or need to see a nuerologist? I need to change eyeglass prescription and I work without glasses at the computer daily.
the pain around, top, behind the ear is mostly associated with the heart. it will gradually affect your arms as well making its movement limited. better to have an EKG to check if you have any trouble with your heart.
Moderator: I appreciate the site's ban on personal emails, but did the writer's suggestion of a web site for sufferers of "idiopathic pain behind the right ear" come to fruition? It seems a plausible opportunity to find a clue to a cause for something evidently troubling many people.
hi, we have the same problem. Did it stop the pain?
I have been having migraines for years and then this pain just started a few days ago and it is so painful that it stops me in my tracks. I cant sleep because as soon as I go to sleep it hurts so bad it wakes me up. So I am sorry it is not normal by any means and I don't know where you got your medical degree but you might want to get a refund. Some of the causes of this kind of pain can be serious so I will let my real doctor figure it out.
