sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

i have it also...probably caused by too much input...rest, quiet, and bicycling through nature relieve my symptoms...as well homeopathic remedies for neuralgia like Belladonna can help quite well
i exercise everyday and do yoga as well. i don't smoke and i eat a very clean diet with few carbs, high veggie and high protein. this is not an overweight lethargy affliction. i have had it on both sides of my head and it comes from nerve firings. i work at a computer most of the day and because of repetitious behaviors, my neck/shoulder problems are intensified and cause further problems for the nerves that run from your spine to your skull. normally i'd agree with your diagnosis of lethargy but that was pretty rude when you don't know anyone on this forum.
I'm reading all of your messages and seeing no one has mentioned a tooth or gum infection. Please see a periodontist or dentist for x-rays and look very carefully for an infected root in the same proximity to your pain. A few of us with the same symptoms have found this root cause. May the Holy Spirit guide you to finding the cause of your pain and get the relief you need. I pray this for all of you in Jesus' name, amen. Prayer helps too, try it!
haha. "THINK ABOUT IT".
I think its sleep because i went to bed and 12 2 nights ago witch is late for me then went to bed a 1 last night and woke up at 3 having pain in the bone behind my ear but idk how to stop it. I tried massaging and taking advil and putting ice but it won't stop.
I also have stabbing head pain on the top, left side, and deep stabbing ear pain. All MRI's are normal, meds aren't helping. Have you had any solutions since your posting here? Many thanks! Candace

Did you ever start this website? I'd like to be involved.
I disagree, I exercise everyday doing the Beach body workouts (tough workouts) and I'm not overweight and I'm still having these pains in my head.
Hi Stopping smoking would be your first best thing to do. The leaders of my Church were given revalation from God back in the mid 1800's that alcohal and tobacco was not good for our body. Look up LDS.org and The Word of Wisdom for more info
I felt like I had to sign up simply to respond to this post? I've been suffering from these horrible shooting pains like being stabbed in my temple for the last 10 years, terrifying really and it isn't till today that I've found out it's simply a headache, one of the most intense painful headaches called " ice pick " I urge everyone worrying about these pains in themselves or anyone else to look up ice pick headaches as you could also be suffering from chronic ice pick headaches like I do, the positive thing is the large majority of the time there's no serious underlying causes to these headaches.
Cannibas works give it a try
