sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
Try cannabus it works must be vaped or inhaled at onset not to get high although you might just , a single dose or two depending on severity worst case you forget you have a headache. Works for my migraines , nothing else does. Other than Percocet after its too late and its addictive and for me I don't get much effect other pain relief for 4-6 hours. If you hit it right away the marijuana works better. No addiction , but I don't for either. Better choice natural.

I get stabbing pain on the right side of my head sometimes around the temple area, other times behind my right ear towards the top. I have also had the pain on the left side occassionally but not as severe. I have also had a burning sensation at the back of my head as well. I get dizzy randomly and have gotten lightheaded as well. That comes and goes and doesn't necessarily appear when I'm in pain. About a week after the head pain started my neck started to tighten up. Fast forward 6 months, MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, blood work, holter monitor (all normal by the way) and I'm still dealing with this. I was diagnosed with Occiptial Neuralgia and I have been in physical therapy for a little over 3 months. Physical therapy has helped a lot. I was experiencing the head pain off and on all day every day. Now it's mostly just neck pain, some head pain but not the sudden sharp stabbing pain like before thankfully. They believe I have tight neck and shoulder muscles pushing on nerves, which is why they suggested PT. Still not cured though and getting quite frustrated at this point. I don't know what else to do. I saw this forum and thought I'd write something to explain my situation in case there is anyone else out there who may benefit from it. Please feel free to let us know if you have experienced anything similiar and what you have done to cure it if you were lucky enough to do so :-)

I am 36 years old and I have been having this pain eversince I was 15. In my case, I feel it within 2 inches above my right hear and I feel it like.. Inside the head, not on surface, as though it has something to do with the brain. In 1997 I went to a clinic to have it checked, they did me x-rays and magnetic resonace scanning, they found nothing wrong. Therefore I would tranquilize those posters above who were concerned about a possible brain tumor. It's not.
I know is extremelly painful but, at least to me, it occurs only once a month and for a second only... Too bad that second gives me the pain of a life time, it's like needle poking through my head.
I am so happy to find a med that stops the pain, which my doctor says is caused by an infection in a deep sinus cavity, which pushes against the nerve endings when swollen. The nasal decongestant Phenylephrine works when nothing else did. My doc gave me antibiotics & Flonase for prevention, but niether stopped the stabs of pain happening ever 30 seconds. I bought Advil allergy & congestion & the stabs disappeared for 4 hrs. Other brands have this med, just find one with Phenylephrine. this saved my sanity til the infection cleared up. God bless everyone suffering
Been going through this for 8 years now. My main issues have been a constant headache at my left temple and worsening upper back pain and the stabbing bruising feeling behind my right ear under the head bone which I can also feel down my right arm and in between shoulder blades! My thoughts and progress are leaning towards bad posture or military neck. On day 2 of holding myself up the right way! I believe this must be it and will be telling anyone I can if it is.
Yes!! thank you! its not just you, I just started taking a B vitamin every day for the past 2 months and the sharp pains in the brains started about a week ago.. I'm going to stop and see if they go away. Thanks again!
Really hope you have quit by now. This is may of 2015. I had to quit when i broke my arm that wasn't healing due to smoking. Its been 9years ! Now i'm experiencing the same damn stabbing pain on the right side of my head same place you were describing. Did you ever figure it out??? WTHeck ?! This hurts ! Heat is the only help so far. Any clue to what it is?

I was having the same thing I was at church and kept getting a stabbing pain above my left ear. I used Deep Relief from Young Living. I put it on the spot I was having the pain on and then on my neck and I think it was about an hour or two and they stopped. I haven't had it happen at all today.
Hi All,
I am female 30 years old, i am observing same kind of pain from a yaer now and thought I am the only one.
THE REASON for the pain is STRESS/ ANXIETY etc.
I will say do not get worried about the pain and start doing following:-
1) Exercise : walk , gym , swim etc
2) Relax your self : Listen to music, medidate, braething exercise.
3) Get your Vitamin D amd Vit B12 checked. I had very low Vit - D
Trigeminal Neuralgia look it up.
Thank you and God bless you!!
I'm a 51 year old female with the same pain. I take multivitamins and B Complex. I read the posts to back over a year ago. It's amazing to find so many of us with the same condition. I really don't know how long I've had the pain, but this is the first time they've repeated so often. I'm going to adjust my Vitamin B intake and see what happens.
Yes thank you
