sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
It sounds like a lot of people are having the same type of disturbing symptoms. I can understand why you all are so concerned. Not only am I a fellow sufferer, but also a health care provider. I have suffered for the last 6 years with glossopharyngeal neuralgia. That is a long fancy name for saying that there is a neuralgia caused by pressure being placed on the ninth cranial nerve--the glossopharyngeal nerve. This nerve sits right next to the vagal nerve which at times gets compressed as well and gives other symptoms as well. My story starts something like what you all are describing. I started having severe pain behind my left ear which progressed to a severe earache that wouldn't go away. There was no sign of any infection. I then developed a severe sore throat that feels like I have strept throat all the time and have difficulty swallowing and at times speaking. The pain extends all along my jaw line and the side of my tongue up to the tip. It also involves the inside of my lower lip. It lasted about 6 months on the L side and then it was gone. I thought I was cured. two weeks later the exact same thing started on the right side and has been there every since. I have times when it isn't as intense. Stress and lack of sleep definitely make it worse. Some people with this condition get worse when air blows on it or they drinks something cold. I am the opposite. Putting something cold on my jaw and ear feels better to me. I have been diagnosed by an oral surgeon, a neurologist, and an ENT who all have the same diagnosis. I have taken all the meds that I am able for nerve pain, but due to the autoimmune diseases that I have I am a little limited. I have opiates to take, but I rarely do because the pain really doesn't respond very well to anything. I am contemplating the definitive surgery which is Microvascular decompression which is done at several centers across the US. The surgeon I am going to has a 95% cure rate and I think it would be definitely worth it. Oh before I forget, in case any of you are having symptoms related to vagal compression like I mentioned before can happen in this condition, you may experience some slowing of the heart rate, dizziness, a drop in blood pressure, or even syncope so you have to be careful about that. As time has passed, I have adapted to living with this condition and it doesn't bother me as much as it did in the beginning. On days when I'm very symptomatic, it is very frustrating, but at least I know what it is and I can look forward to days when it will be better. I hope all of you find the diagnosis that is appropriate to your symptoms, and just keep this one in mind. Most doctors have never heard of it so educate yourself. Have a good day and good luck.

I just had the exact same thing last saturday it started out exactly like how you described and it ended up being shingles. I finally broke down and went to urgent care after my face started to explode with blisters. Scared me to death. It happens with a low immune system or stress factor. I live in NY and it has been a horrible winter. Please go to the doctor immediately it is better to get the medicine to treat it as soon as possible. I had no idea what it could possibly be and waited to long. The pain is extreme. Hope this has been some help and sorry to sound so intense but I would be glad if it saved someone else the pain and suffering.

it could be a infected sinus cavity. If a great doctor can look inside the sinus cavity with a camera they may detect a infection that is festering.
I got Bells Palsy and still have it 2 yes later. I too often suffer from pain behind the right ear and neurologist did MRI of brain and we found tortuosity of the carotid arteries of the neck and brain. Nothing told for me to do to treat symptoms. Blood tests showed B12 deficiency.
This is just like the pain I had after having shingles in my ear maybe 20 years ago. It is like a knitting needle going through the side of my head and though my ear. It has been happening non stop all day long
I am on Neurontin 2 100mg a day, and this is a new pain for me lately. I had neck surgery 7 month ago, and take several other medications as well. The pain over the right ear is so sharp, that I almost pass out. any suggestions,?

I've been to this site bc I'm looking for facts about what's really happening to me. The sudden jolt and short sharp pain in the head above the right ear, I'm experiencing it too. I'm just 17. I don't want to tell mom because she might over react. Could this possibly be an effect of my wisdom tooth? Because my gums is beginning to swell. I'm going crazy. I'm thinking, maybe I got tumor or something..arggggg but please God noooooo.
I started getting this pain, In the Past I used to get it and it will last only for few minutes. I put pressure on it with my fingers or beat the place with my where it hurts. Today the pain lasted for 2 days. sometimes it comes back within 10 seconds and last for 1-2 seconds. Stretching helped me a bit I would recommend others to do a slow stretching by Turing the Head in all direction and drink a lot of water.
