Hey guys!
So, I have been experiencing this pain severely for about 10 years. I am 23 now and a second year medical student. I could not wait to get to the GU system to finally learn about this. I noticed that after strenuous exercise or being dehydrated when I try to urinate, I would get an IMMENSE pain in my umbilicus. It hurt so bad I would keel over in pain and not be able to stand up straight.
Well, anyway, after reading all these posts, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I, too, have been to many doctors, none were able confidently diagnose anything. BUT I HAVE GOOD NEWS. After much sleuthing, and using everything we've learned about the Urogenital system, I have two theories which help explain two types of umbilicus pains people are feeling. FIRST, those who get an immense pulling pain towards their bladder, that pain is due to spasm of the dehydrated muscles in the abdomen. Specifically, the deeper muscles. They contract and pull on the median umbilical ligament which contains the Urachus. This is an embryological remnant of the allantois, a "channel" which connected the umbilical cord of a fetus to the bladder. It's a straight line from the belly button to your bladder. When dehydrated a spasm could cause a muscle contraction and severe pain. So, that pulling pain is exactly that. Best treatment: Hydration and electrolytes! Also, when the pain is occurring contract your abdomen with the pulling sensation and curl up and relaxxxxxxxxx (like fetal position). This indirect technique will relax the spasm after about 90 seconds. Then slowlyyyyyyyy return to normal posture. If still contracting, return to fetal position and hold it again.
Second, some of you explained something slightly different, which resembles more of an umbilical hernia, which may need to be operated on (you would know this by a bulge) or it could be a Chapman Reflex point indicating bladder dysfunction (which could be a whole list of different things). You could notice this, also, by a small bulge or nodule that you can feel. BUT if you don't have a bulge then likely it is the first thing I wrote.
Doctor's often lose sight of the simpler things like muscle spasm and jump right to disease diagnosing and surgery. LEARN YOUR ANATOMY and you can treat things more accurately. I apologize for all those who said a Doctor told them they were imagining it or making it up. Go to an Osteopathic Doctor next time :)
HOPE THIS HELPS
Sincerely,
(Hopefully) Future Urologist
I'm 16, male. This has been going on my whole life and I thought something was up, I've asked the doctors almost everytime I go and they say the same thing everytime, which is if it goes away shortly and is a rare occasion then it's not a problem.
I see now you guys all have this and it just needs to be diagnosed so we can spare future generations from getting paranoid about this like all of us did.
This has happened to me off and on for my whole life. I just read all the posts and I just started crying. I never knew anyone experienced this like I did. All I could ever describe it as was a sharp tearing in my belly button, it feels like my bladder is being ripped open, and it goes down to where I pee. I first got it when I was 13 and I'm 18 now it keeps getting worse and worse. Plz help me
