I lost sense of taste for sweet and salty.
I had pneumonia 8 months ago and immediately quit smoking so I put my body in shock.
I had a lung biopsy, the dye test twice and somehow lost taste.
I gained 20 lbs. trying to discover how food would taste better (?) now that I don't smoke.
With the dye tests I should have experienced a metallic taste, NOT ME.
I consume red hots as my new oral habit and have irritated the inside of my cheeks. My tongue is not sore and that's where I thought I should ail.
It's really difficult to prepare a meal and not be able to taste it, just eat out of habit now..
Any clues?

I have the same issue as everyone else. I lost my taste back in July of this year. I put on a good front for the family but I am so upset over this. I have lost 60lb so far. So I experiment with different things to see what i can and can not eat. SO far I had every blood test my Dr. and ENT can think of. I also had an MRI of the sinus and how I am having one done of the whole head. Other than this my Dr. tells me I am fine. If anyone comes up with anything please do share.
This is amazing... I thought I was the only one in the world this was happening to!
I lost my sense of sweet two years ago this month... the See's candies I'd received as a Christmas gift started tasting metallic. I thought something was wrong with them until everything sweeter than fruit started tasting that way.
I can still taste the sweetness of fruit except ripe bananas. Salt, spice, bitter, etc. is fine. My sense of smell is better now than it was before this happened.
I never liked artificial sweeteners, so that's not the reason for me. I don't take any medications. I always thought this might be related to smoking, but I quit a year ago and my taste still hasn't come back. I wonder how many others posted here are smokers or ex-smokers.

To those who have very recently lost their sense of taste (sweet/salty)
I had it happen to me two days ago when I caught one of the most severe cases of the flu I've ever had in my life. It completely knocked me out, and then my ability to taste sweet and salty completely vanished... everything tasted like erasers and pennies.
BUT after two days, as I recover, my sense of taste is coming back as well. I was horrified when I read all this stuff about some people losing theirs for years... but mine bounced right back with me.
Just a shout of encouragement.

I have lost my ability to taste sweet things. I quit smoking 10/07 and started using Nicorette gum. I continued chewing it for a year ( I know you are not supposed to use it past a few months, but I was not ready to stop) In November 08 I had to stop the gum because I was worried about it burning my throat. If you chew too much or too fast you get horrible heartburn and hiccups. I was afraid of long term damage. Anyway, since I stopped chewing the nicotine gum, nothing tastes right. Especially sweet things. They taste peppery. I have had this problem since November. I was hoping it would clear up with time. It is now the end of December and I think the problem is getting worse. Has anyone else experienced this?
I had a case of the stomach flu about 10 days ago. For the first day or so after I felt "better", I ate applesauce and toast which was fine. After another day or so, anything I put in my mouth was horrible! Dont' want to be gross, but it tastes like it was mixed with stomach bile. It's gotten a bit better, but now if anything goes in my mouth that is sweet, it just isn't right. I've pinpointed it to the back of my tongue -- again, it's like a bile taste. I haven't called the doctor yet. I'm going to give it another few days, but if not better I'm going next week. Anyone else out there with a similar story?

Today is 1/10/09 and as of last night my taste buds make everything taste bitter.
The only thing I can drink is water without having this taste which tells me something.
I have also had a similar bout with the FLU these past 2 weeks like many of the people that have these symptoms and occasionally drink.
It seems like the thing that set it off is when I tasted some shitake mushrooms. After that everything taste like I need to gargle and brush the bitter taste of my tongue.
I plan to do a series of colon cleansing to speed the process of helping my body to rid whatever it is making feel ill. If this doesn't work my next step is fasting and change of diet (veggies only).

I have also lost the ability to taste sweet...except in the very back of my mouth, I can tast it a bit.
I have recently painted.
I have been fighting an upper respiratory funk of some sort for several months.
I use Splenda
I have been using mentholated cough drops.
I have recently ( in last three weeks) started taking vitamins.
Onset was about 5 days ago. I first realized it when I ordered coffee with Splenda in it...and thought for sure that it was not put in.
I tasted only very bitter coffee.
From that point I barely if at all taste sweet.
I tried chocolate with almonds last night and it was like eating nuts surrounded by lard...
The upper respiratory issue...which i am beginning to think might be an allergy...it is worse when I stay at my male friends house ...where a cat and dog usually sleep on his bed. I am a vet tech and have had a few cats or dogs irritate my throat and nose, and I have a kitty ...so I can not say for certain if animal dander is the problem. But the endurance and the tickle in the throat as well as the symptoms worsening and lessening in different places...tells me allergy?
Maybe it or the draining and tickling in my throat are realted to the taste loss.
Or maybe I'm grabbing at straws.
I'm not bothered so much by the actual taste loss...more by the idea that something from a biochemical point of view could be wrong with me.

YES! I know it has been a few months since you posted, but I hope you got him to a doc since then. From your description I would guess he had a mini stroke and that means there could still be a blood clot present or there could be permanent nerve damage. The emergency room cannot refuse treatment even if you do not have insurance and there are many agencies that can help with payment. I hope he is doing well now.
I was using splenda for the firs time last night to make some lemon raspberry bars for a diabetic neighbor. I touched the splenda for two pinches as the recipe called for and tasted the raspberry preserves from a spoon after filling the bars. i also tasted (just a dab) of the topping, and lo and behold this morning I ahd a headache and no taste of sweet. Its been about 5hours and its starting to return though.
I had less than a thimble full of the stuff, probably less than half a packet you'd find at a restaurant and I can pin it to the splenda. Cut splenda and aspartame out and see what happens. I have an unusual sensitivity for medications, meaning that the tiniest bit affects me majorly, so I can attest if it did this to me, its likely whats causing it in you all (at least some) check the ingredients in your foods and act accordingly.

I've never eaten Splenda (that I know of) and never eat stuff with aspartame. Yet I lost my sense of sweet taste for probably a month about a year ago. Thankfully it came back! Don't know what caused it. Apple pie tasted like flour.
What reminded me of this problem was that I just ate a cookie and it didn't taste sweet :-( I hope the problem didn't come back!
I've been eating alot of sugary things lately ... maybe overloads the sweet-sensing taste buds for awhile???

I too, have suddenly lost my sense of taste with an exception of the outer sides of the tongue. The only thing that I've changed is that I've been taking about 1800 mg of Aleve daily for the past few weeks because all of a sudden I've had a right knee problem....out of the blue too.
