My daughter is 16, and has been dealing with morning nausea since she was 8 years old. Waking to the alarm definitely makes it worse for her, but the nausea is every day, just light nausea when she gets up on her own, compared to heavy nausea if she is woken by the alarm. (She gets 9-10 hours of sleep on a school night, so not a low sleep amount.) Her best breakfast time is between 9-10am, when the nausea usually passes. She also has to avoid staying up too late at night, or the morning nausea is even worse (whether she eats before bed or not).
We have had every test done there is- ultrasound, upper GI series, lower GI series, gallbladder function test, many, many blood tests. Everything comes back normal. She doesn't have IBS or acid reflux, or ulcer, or gastoperisis, or h.pylori, or any type of cancer- I could go on and on about what she doesn't have, because she's been tested for everything. Zofran and other anti-nausea meds did not work, and acid reflux meds (which she took before she was tested) made her nausea worse whether taken in the morning or night. She is on a prescription nasal spray for post nasal drip they thought could be causing nausea, but it's not helping
In the morning, she has tried eating bread or toast, saltines, water only, water with bland food, juice only, juice with food, milk only, milk with food, yogurt (which really makes her more nauseated), a protein, etc. They all made her feel worse, and usually would make her vomit. I'm pleased that she can most mornings keep down half of a can of carnation instant breakfast- she's still nauseous, but doesn't vomit. She brings the rest to finish at school when the nausea has passed, along with a snack. (Thankfully, she goes to a small high school and is allowed to eat during class.) She eats lunch just fine, and has a snack a couple of hours later. She is a bit underweight, so needs to eat regularly to make up for lost calories at breakfast.
She had testing when she was younger, and all came back normal. The doctors said nothing was wrong, it was just nerves. I had her retested this year by a better dr, but again the tests all came back normal. However, this time we were not blown off with no hope. Since all the tests were inconclusive, the dr said it is most likely due to the nerves on her gastro tract misfiring while she's sleeping. It usually causes a motion sick feeling in the morning, which how my daughter said her nausea feels. Most people outgrow it, but some don't, and I believe it can strike in adulthood. There is no test for this, it's just determined by all other tests coming back normal.
The dr prescribed 4mg of an antihisthamine that has a side effect of ridding nausea and stimulating the appetite. She took one pill before bed, but unfortunately, this caused my daughter extreme fatigue that kept her sleeping for hours upon hours for three days! (Thankfully it happened during a school break.) She felt the effects of fatigue after that one pill for nearly a week. (This is not a normal reaction, and it works well for others.) The sad thing is, she didn't have any nausea the day after the pill, so it did work in that respect. The dr said she should no longer take it, not even a half dose, so we are back to square one.
The other option is 5mg of an antidepressant (I forget the name, but any gastro dr should know about it), that is no longer used as an antidepressant, but is used just for these issues. (As an antidepressant it was prescribed as 200mg, so 5mg is just enough to treat the morning nausea.) However, after the results of the antihisthamine, my daughter is very nervous about the antidepressant, and said she would rather live with the nausea. We are going for a follow up with the dr, and I'm going to find out if this antidepressant is the only other option.
Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps someone.
I had nausea every morning for 35 yrs. At age 64 it got so bad I could barely walk across a room without feeling sick. Doctors pretty much ignored me. Finally I had a bleeding ulcer with severe anemia. The iron supplements also stopped my nausea. I am all well now, but if I start nausea again I start taking iron again and I'm fine in a few days.
I am 48 yr young woman. I live in South Carolina, Since I am a scientist at heart I shall document as many facts and occurances I believe may or may not be related to my acute sudden onset EXTREME nausea. It started for me yesterday 4/3/15. I recently went on an antibiotic for a tooth infection, Amoxicillin with clavulanate from sandoz lab 875/125 x 20.
I have 4 left. Yesterday I woke extra early and was extremely nauseous. I thought if I ate some plain yogurt it would calm the acid down. My stomach felt filled with acid and my chest felt like it was filled with air.
The yogurt was a bad idea. It stayed down a few moments and then it was all bad from there. I also had the runs, and I do mean RUN, forgive the following, but they were black and runny. Like most of the woman below, humm i just noticed we are all woman, interesting, I started to feel better as the day went on. Towards the evening my stools returned to normal brown and the feeling of vomiting subsided.
Today, I woke up around 5 am coughing and coughing bad. Then I noticed I was feeling sick again, I tried to make it to the bathroom. I failed in my mission. It was full on projectile vomiting. I have never experienced anything like it. I did eat some rye toast it made me feel better and drank some tea. I do still feel a burning sensation in my chest. I am extremely sleepy. I have not managed to get off the couch.
I hope this helps. Get well soon, y'all.
Everything you describe fits my symptoms to a T. I'm a 44 y/o female. I had my gallbladder removed several years ago, but lately I feel like I have morning sickness every morning and I'm not pregnant. It's horrible because I just start gagging for no reason. Brushing my teeth and tongue - something that's never been a problem - is now a big one for me. I wish someone would post a solution or diagnosis because it makes mornings at work difficult. Not to mention that because I'm a woman, everyone just assumes I'm pregnant so rumors are flying. I force myself to eat a Greek yogurt every morning, but it really doesn't help and makes me want to throw it right up. I don't know what to do.
I am almost 60 years old and my husband is 58. We have both had on and off nauseousness and we have no clue what it is or why. Maybe it happens to people our age. I thought it might be environmental, but don't know what from. We live in the country so not a lot of pollutants around. I sure would like to hear from others out there with these symptoms. We live in Southern Indiana.
