Constipation is a common problem in the Western society and this stems from the types of foods that we consume in most cases. Our diets are heavy in starches and proteins and we pay little attention to foods like fibers, fruits, and vegetables. Therefore, it is no surprise that patients often may be unable to defecate normally.

When it comes to treatment options, there is a multitude of options that patients can consider to try to pass stools more consistently. When it comes time to manage the symptoms, some of the first efforts that any physician should try is to is encourage lifestyle modifications in patients at avoiding medications.

Plant-based products are the majority of foods that we should be eating, but in reality, due to the convenience and satisfaction of eating more protein-heavy diets easily available at any restaurant or supermarket, people tend to overindulge in these types of foods.

Physicians will recommend that patients suffering from constipation should try diets heavier on foods packed with fiber like fruits and vegetables. This simple lifestyle modification is believed to relieve up to 66 percent of constipation cases alone.

Patients also enjoy the freedom of still being able to have complete control over the foods they eat and can incorporate only foods that they like.

If diets alone are unsuccessful at bringing relief to a patient, the next step in management would be to turn to some medical solution. Laxatives are considered to be the most successful intervention, and patients will be able to achieve regular bowel movements in only a few days after using this product.

Glycerin suppositories are another avenue that some patients may choose to take to find relief from their constipation. One of the advantages of this decision is that it is available over-the-counter (OTC), meaning that a patient will not need to waste their time traveling to a doctor's office if they already know what the problem is. Some patients may also prefer this medication because they avoid needing to discuss embarrassing topics like bowel movements with the physician.

Unfortunately, this product does not have many advantages besides being more convenient and studies fail to show that there are any medical benefits from taking this supplement compared to a placebo medication.

Constipation is a problem that most of the human population will face at some point during their life and constipation only a few occasions is no cause for alarm. Should this become a frequent occurrence, however, and you find that you are suffering from it more than 3 times a year, it is important that you ascertain you are not suffering from something more severe. Constipation is a symptom that can be associated with a number of intestinal tract pathologies like diverticulosis or colon cancer to name a few. It is important that patients who are older than the age of 50 start having screening colonoscopies to make sure they there intestines are without anything worrisome. You should start having them even sooner if your relatives have been diagnosed with colon cancer before.

Remember, constipation is something that can happen naturally at times but if it becomes more frequent, self-treating with laxatives or supplements like Glycerin will not solve your problem indefinitely. Consult with your doctor and get the necessary screening tests you need so you can avoid serious consequences. [1]
