Audible noise when moving my eyes

This doesn't happen always, but between 5-10 times a week I will hear (or appear to hear) a noise which vaguely sounds like someone quickly ripping a piece of paper or cloth when I move my eyes from one point to another (left to right, up to down, etc). I guess I'm just trying to figure out is this really happening, or am I suffering from some type of auditory hallucination? There doesn't seem to be any single set of circumstances it occurs in. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

What bothers me about this is when I started to experience the whoosh/click, I did online research and found posts from 2008 (there may even be earlier ones) talking about this happening when missing or going off anti depressants. And yet, here we are, 2017, 9 years later and it's still not a recognized symptom; doctors and physiatrists haven't heard of it. So in my case and many others, it is caused by being late with or missing a dose or going off anti depressants (Effexor is what I'm taking) and some people experience it long after they stop taking antidepressants. For me, I experience a whoosing/click noise when I move my eyeballs side to side. It is almost always 3 times with a spacing pattern of long - short - short. This means that the after the first whoosh/click there is a slightly longer pause before the next two clicks. Then I move my eyes to the other side and it will do the same, whether my eyes are open it not. So what damage is taking place? Is it related to the eyes, nearby nerves or brain signals? Is there a treatment for those still experiencing it after medication? Is it doing more permanent damage the longer we use medication? How high a percentage of people taking antidepressants are affected? Are doctors reporting the symptom or just dismissing it? This needs to be pursued.
I have been on zoloft and paroxetine anti-D's for nearly 3 years and have had this brain zapping sensation (light sabre sounds), during the course of this time. I thought this sensation was something totally unrelated and had various tests for ENT issues, vertigo, brain etc. Now coming off this medication one of the worst side effects of withdrawal is the brain zapping ie when i move my eyes to the side, sounds like a camera shutter going off a few times. Now I realise this must be due to the anti depressants, or the lack off, and when I'd had the sensations before, obviously it was because I had forgotten to take my medication.
I've been thinking the same things. I got the eyeball whooshing sounds when I tapered off and discontinued sertraline, and I know of two other people who've experienced the same with venlafaxine (Effexor). The symptom was maddening -- I likened it to the sound of socked feet shuffling on carpet, but the sprinkler analogy is quite good, too. It lasted for a month, but mercifully did completely disappear after that. I would love to see some proper research on this, too. My psychiatrist had never heard of it, either. What kind of damage is SSRI/SNRI withdrawal doing to the inner ear to create such a nightmarish effect? It's fascinating.
I have the same problem and what you describe may sound a bit geeky to people but its a great description of exactly what I am hearing when I move my eyes side to side as well. The light saber in Star Wars is a perfect description! I am ok if my eyes are closed and I try this, and looking up and down is fine. Not sure if I have an auditory problem, ear problem or whats going on! So glad to hear I'm not the only one. What is happening I have no idea! I did seem to have temperature/virus when I first noticed the problem but that has passed now and I still have this problem. did have slight dizziness too but this has passed.
I have reduced SSRI's and am having the same sensation.
Peroxetine here. Doc thinks im lying about losing my meds so I'm suffering from the horrible nasal congestion and the zoom zoom noises when i move my eye balld
To me it sounds like a loud fan in slow motion. Just stopped taking paxil. I was taking 1 pill a day, I went to 1 pill every other day, and then 1/2 pill every other day. When I would forget to take "the pill" for a couple of days I would also get an electric shock (it seemed) when closing my eyes.
YES! I have this but I think the sound is more like a race car speeding by me. My youngest sister has it, too, and we don't know how to get it out so the Docs understand what we're talking about. It happens quite often, actually. I call it the ffitz ffitz, cuz It DOES sound like a ripping noise. What is happening to us??
OMG finally found other people with the same problem !! Mine is with moving my eyes left and right, vibration sound, and causes me to feel sick. End up with migraines. Also have the problem to be bending up or down. Or leaning over Doctors look at me and wonder (is she all there and have no idea on what i'm on about -they obviously haven't come across it before or put it into the tooooooo hard basket ) One nological dr has put me on paroxetine tablets but this is only a mask to cover over the problem and when i stop. You guessed it, I'TS STILL THERE. PLEASE HELP MY UN ANSWER PROBLEM - WHAT IS TRULY CAUSING THIS OR THE NAME OF IT.
I truly believe it's a problem caused by anti-depressants. I've been off them now for a couple of months and no light sabre sounds or dizziness problems at all since I stopped Believe me when i say, it was so severe that once, when I had flu, combined with zoloft, I was at a concert and had to leave but I could hardly walk due to the dizziness, and light sabre sounds. I have never felt so unwell, and was actually crying with confusion, trying to walk through crowds of people - and you know what that's like, looking left, right, up, down.. no wonder I couldn't walk very far. I managed to make it to a metro station and called my husband who when he arrived said I looked as white as a sheet and he had to help me walk home. This is rare because it was combined with flu, but if anti-Ds cause this reaction then surely Docs must be more aware of these awful side effects. And it's soooo difficult to explain to someone who isn't going through the same thing..
Superior canal dehiscence syndrome, google it and read symptoms
People with Superior Canal Dehiscence can hear they eyeballs moving,I can too.
I had already googled SCD and it's not that. It happens when taking anti-depressant drugs, and clears when stopped.
Wow, I too am glad to have found these posts. My new ENT ordered an MRI last week of head, neck and brain and we await the results. I've had mild tinnitus for years but this sandpaper sound has been a recent addition. Particularly concerning was the addition of my eye movement in an upward direction while blinking causing the sandpaper sound. I was beginning to have a bit of a panic attack as I feared something major was happening. I feel a bit more reassured while I await results fter reading this. I was reading stories about strokes and seizures and they were causing me more distress than need be. I do so try and not be my own doctor. Thanks for helping me realize that while a concern, I was not in imminent danger. Be well all!
Thanks for this. I'm coming off cymbalta now myself and am have this exsact same issue with my eyes and this sound. Almost hi pitched but I can't explain it either. Your answered helped me.
