I'm fifteen and basically most of my eye lashes have fallen out. Around 3-4 years ago I used have these massive styes that I even refused to go to school with. Throughout that period of my life my eyelashes fell out and they never decided to grow back again. The styes stopped about two years ago but only recently have they started again. I've tried everything I can do; washing them daily, using a hot flannel, revitalash and using oils before I sleep. I rarely wear mascara and I never use fake eyelashes. I don't want the rest of my eyelashes to fall out as well.

I am a healthy 41yr old female that is now encountering my 2nd time in a year of losing a clump of eyelashes from my left eye.  I have done extenisive amounts of online research trying to figure out why this is happening....I work out 5-6 days a week & am a very healthy weight with no real medical problems.  Last time this happened I got really good at cutting up fake eyelashes & placing them on the gap between lashes (I also cut the lashes down so that they matched mine).  I found I had many symptoms of  Demodex folliculorum or  (yes, like mange on dogs...gross, I know!!).  I have a spoiled 11 yr old English Bulldog that I was kissing on the top of his head & some people feel that Demodox can be spread to humans while other say no.  Either way let's say I've pretty much stopped the kissing & just pet the heck out of him now & then wash my hands.  Anyway, that the problem cleared up for me by using Ocusoft lid scrub pre-moistened pad to gently scrub my eyelids then using a Q-tip w/Jason brand Tea Tree oil & a little Vaseline or Macadamia oil to dilute the Tea Tree oil because sometimes it burned a little. Try checking out this article to see where I got some ideas for this....  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demodex_folliculorum  Also check out this youtube video I just found to go along with it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_8z0EPE_rY  So when this happened to me the first time I had a lot of scalp itching & what seemed to be hormonal acne like never before.  I began using Sea Buckthorn soaps, oils & pills because this has been said (on the internet of course!) to help as well.  I did all of this & eventually my lashes came back beautifully.  Unfortunately the problem has come back (just the missing eyelashes so far) but I'll admit I got lazy w/the treatment so to I'll be working with the same products & just remind myself if/when they come back to use the eyelash treatment once a week to keep things right.  I hope my post can help someone because I know how your self esteem can be effected with this problem.  Good luck to us all!!:-)

Hello everyone....ive been having this problem since forever and I am now 23...the best way to make this pain go away is that I sit infront of a mirror with my tweezers gently tugging at every lash in that area until I find the one thats causing the pain...thats when I pull it out, then wala pain gone and therefore I dont have to lose more than 1 lash ....hkpe this helps but I woukd still like to fully understand what causes this

I have no idea why you would ever get a thumbs down on a serious question, that is just awful. Dare i say, but I predict one person in that 47 will one day lose their eyelashes...Oowell. anyway I have this same MATTER currently. Going to the doctor this week. I'll bookmark this and let you know what I find out now. And BTW, have you ever worn false eyelashes? Or eyelash glue, or eyelash glue remover around said area? Ever?

Good point you have to make people aware of the hair/thyroid connection, as most are not, but the person already stated their thyroid was fine.

Very helpful info! I have multiple medical issues and I assumed it was a thyroid thing, but it just so happens that my allergies have been terrible this week and my eye was swollen last night (it happens frequently). I opted not to treat it as only ugly amounts of meds work, and I'm on a lot already. This morning when my lashes were gone, it didn't occur to me that might be related to swelling/allergies. When you have so much going on, for so many years, it's sometimes hard to consider the whole picture. I really appreciate your post!

I also have a section of eyelashes that are missing on the top right eye. The doctor told me that it's probably due to the pollutants in the environment and that it probably won't gore back. He told me that it's not allergies to make up cause the eye would be irritated in that case. He also mentioned it could be due to my thyroid which was slightly abnormal last year, but wasn't severe enough to take medication. I will have the thyroid tested again . It's a relief to hear from some of you that they do grow back. Thankfully for me, a little eye liner makes it less obvious.

Hello, I am 48 and I started losing lashes 6 years ago, right now I have a huge bold spot in my left eyelid, I went long time ago to the dermatologist and she said that it was something normal happen to many people, also I could be allergic to the Ibuprofen for headaches that I was taking. She gave me a prescription for Latisse and it really helps to grow them back faster. Try it, it's the best thing for this problem. I have being using Latisse since and I am happy to have a hope to see my lashes grow back faster. Good luck.

If you are still having this issue, have your thyroid rechecked, insist on a tsh, free t4, free t3 , total t3 and a reverse t3, and thyroid antibodies. Doctors use the tsh as the gold standard and and use the old lab numbers of up to 5.0, the high number was lowered to 3.0. I discovered this recently and my tsh tested at 3.5, just above the "normal " range, using the narrowed range. I put my symptoms together and I think I have an under active thyroid; I'm always cold, I have gained weight, despite exercise and diet, dry skin, eyebrows thinned out and about 18 months ago, I lost a large clump of eyelashes on the outer part of my right eye. They took nearly a year to grow back and they are not nearly as thick or as long as my left eye. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist coming up

Yes have your thyroid tested! If it was slightly abnormal, it's not functioning right and your thyroid is the control center for your body. Look up hypothyroid. If your tsh is above 3 (the narrowed ranges) you are likely hypothyroid. My doctor told me my results were normal but was using the old lab standard of 5.47. Mine was 3.5. Insist on a full thyroid panel, free t4, free t3, reverse t3, total t4 and t3 as well as thyroid antibodies. Expect to be your own advocate. It wasn't until I told my doctor all the symptoms I was having; weight gain (despite more exercise and the fact I take a stimulant to treat add) dry skin, thinning eyebrows, lash loss (took a year to grow back) cold all the time, brain fog etc. He finally took it seriously and referred me to an endocrinologist. Also skin problems are an issue with thyroid dysfuction, maybe styles too. The thyroid is the control center if the body, if it's out of whack so are you

wow. I was really surprised to see 4 pages of comnents on this subject! But now I realize, this is very common - although it still bugs me. My right eye is the worst one - a whole missing clump right in the middle - I'm entirely too practical to try false lashes - also, I work in the sweltering heat so they wouldnt hold up anyway. I didnt see this as as a cause, but I might have missed it here ... During jan- feb I worked 2 jobs AND had over 20 days of battling 3 severe chest colds. My stress was extremely high. Also, when very fatigued & physically stressed, I develope a fever blister on the right top lip - I can always tell when a fever blister is coming on bc its always after over-working outdoors in heat, or after having a bad fever, and usually for 2-3 days my right eye 'burns' or feels 'grainy' - then the fever blister erupts and I literally have zero energy for about 2 days. I think the physical stress of 2 jobs & being sick caused my lashes to fall out. I'm glad to know they will re-grow, trying to bear in mind that 70 days is over two months ... Before I looked up 'missing eyelashes', I already started a 'thyroid health' diet, and also for general health - eliminating caffeine, all processed food, and starches. Started fish oil & multi-vitamin. My diet is now 75% fresh fruit & veggies, mostly raw, or lightly stir-fried in coconut oil ... and, btw, I quit the second job. What good is extra income if I dont feel good? I'd rather budget better, and have free time to relax!

Hi, I know this post was a while ago but I've read your reply and I am exactly the same as you. I lose a lot of lashes (like phases of 6-8 a day) but they always grow back!! I stopped using my curler about 7 month ago as I thought this was the culprit as I only lost them on my top lid...and it is still happening but I went to my doctor and she said it could still be having an effect as i probably over used the curler for 4 years. As it's repeatedly made a lot of them loose over a course of a long period so the eyelashes are still in this growth and shed pattern ("syncronised") even after discontinuing of use, until phasing out to a normal growth pattern again. As each shedding phase seems to be getting better for me after stopping using it. Hopefully anyway, as it's making me really depressed:(
