I am African American, I had Rhinoplasty on 3/3/2009. I am getting my sutures removed on 3/9/2009, tomorrow. The doctor said he did not need to pack my nose. I can see the tip of my nose now and I am quite concerned about the unavailing tomorrow. Before surgery he did tell me that African American healing may take 18months but, I would be fine going out in public within a week or two. Yes, I am sure I can go out in public, but, will I want to. I have no choice I have work and school. My tip is so swollen, and look at my nostrils and the thick skin in between. I am very concerned. 18 months is a long time. Its hard to see in the photo. But there is a stitch on the tip and I can see another one underneath the tape on my bridge. I cant tell if it’s long or what. I wont really now anything until tomorrow. Maybe I should have left well enough alone. I hope he did not butcher my nose. He is supposed to be a reputable doctor . I paid 8,000 dollars. I should have just paid down my student loans. I’m very scared. At least the swelling went down in my face although its very much swollen my eyes no longer look like I have been beat up. I will update you tomorrow.

My nose had better look like perfection in 18 months. It looked so much better before. I am having serious second thoughts. I really do not want to have a second surgery.

You said your nose better be perfection for waiting 18 months. There is no such thing. Plastic surgery is not perfect like the movies have you believe. Cortney Cox said it best. Only 20% can get away with it. You can only hope you nose is improved 20-30 percent.
Correct. We all should clearly understand that rhinoplasty is a complex operation, not only the doc has to have the right techniques, but also the aesthetic(al) feel. So first be realistic about the final results, avoid super optimistic doctors.
I'm 15 days post closed operation. It looks a little bit better that
before, but one side of the bridge has a bump. Swelling?
At the moment people hardly notice that i had a nose job.
I think my doc was too careful with my nose and let's hope that the looks will improve with time.
I also had a pig nose when i had my cast on (for 7 days), after it was removed, the nose looked significantly smaller.

When I said perfection, I was being funny. However I paid for a nose job I expect improvement. Right now I am embarrassed to say I paid for this. it's is still early so far there is no improvement from where I originally started from. However there is an improvement in swelling.
16 days post closed operation.
i am SO glad i found this forum because i have been freaking out like crazy. i feel THE EXACT SAME WAY about my nose. i feel so deformed & right now i just hate it & in a way i'm like, wanting my old nose back. i also do feel like it's a prosthetic nose & it looks bigger than it was & i'm not sure i trust what my mother & surgeon have told me, which is that it WILL get better, it just needs time. i dunno how to feel at this point, really. i'm getting depressed about it. i feel so deformed. i have always gotten looks from people because i always make an effort to look groomed when i go out in public but right now, i feel like they look at me & think OMG her nose is prosthetic.

I had primary rhinoplasty done by Dr. Rollin Daniel 2 years ago. He left me with a very short, upturned, saddle-back nose. I have been sooo upset since that day.
10 day ago I went to Dr. Andrew Frankel for revision rhinoplasty. He used irradicated rib cadaver to raise my bridge and lengthen my nose. Although the profile looks great and I know that I would love my new nose if the swelling were to go down by 50%, right now I look like I was punched in the face from the front view. I can't wait for the swelling to go down, it is REALLY big, wide and bulbous right now! From the looks of all of these messages, it seems that this is pretty normal. I was curious of anyone has had the type of revision that I had done? I assume that if you reduce your nose and it is swollen, then by me having material added to it, I should be even more swollen.
I really do look very bad and don't know how I am going to face friends and coworkers as I did not tell anyone about the surgery.

I had my first rhino 5 years ago 2001. the hump and tip of my big nose were improved, but extra cartilage was left in my left nostril and asymmetry of my nostrils remained after all this time although I was told it would eventually settle within 12 months from op. Well it didn't.
I decided to reduce the size of my nose once again as well as addressing the problems caused by the first rhino while undertaking other procedures to increase projection in my cheek bones.
Unable to go back to the same surgeon, I was recommended by friends to go and see another surgeon.
This time the surgeon performed an open rhino (2nd feb 2009), more painful that the first one, also the nostrils size were reduced, I requested a "super-tip" for the tip of my nose which, would look chiseled and very defined. Well, I never being so disappointed... tomorrow will be 7 weeks after my surgery, there is no more swelling on my face or eyes, no bruising, but my nose looks horrible, it look swollen, wider, longer and bigger than before, not to mention the horrible scar under my nose. My top lip also is still swollen. My surgeon says that it normal and to be patient....(I was told the same thing in 2001...but nothing changed) I am going through counseling to deal with emotional issues as I cannot recognise myself in the mirrow anymore, I have difficulty facing friends, work clients and just going to the shops... I lost my confidence completely... I was not expecting this reaction at all. I hate it!!!!!!
Although the profile apparently seems improved it does not resemble what I requested and imagined. We did image manipulation on the computer with my Doc, but nothing really shows yet... if ever will. The thought of going under another rhino in 12 months time if it doesn't settle is freaking me out. My nostrils are still asymmetric and the cartilage inside my left nostril is still visible.
I demanded a scar revision and that will be performed in 2 weeks time under local and sedation... I am so apprehensive and scared of the additional downtime even tho it will only be skin-crafting.
It is very hard to look at yourself in the mirror everyday and hating what you see reflected in it, after spending lots of money and going through pain and post op depression. I have lost trust in my surgeon and possible realistic recovery results.
If things dont improve in 12 months I'm seriously considering suing my Doc. I dont know whether I will be able to do so, but at the moment I am very, very angry.
Does anyone know what should I do????
Can you really sue your surgeon?????

I had open rhino done 3 1/2 weeks ago and I am still swollen my god! My tip is hard and swollen and it seems like it is pulling up my nose and nostrils. Is this normal??
I also have a V like columella. My columella seems to droop considerably even though he brought it up a bit. Im confused by this too even though its swollen. Anyone know about this?
One more thing... my septum is badly swollen. I can see it on both sides when I look into my nostrils. Granted, its gotten a lot better since my surgery, but its still swollen and pushing on my columella and who knows what else. Does anyone know what a swollen septum does? And when should my septum go back to normal? Im nervous that my septum is going to get in the way of the healing even though my surgeon said it wouldnt.

I would like to say i got my rhinoplasty done on the 28th of Feb and even though i see considerable difference in my bridge and the width of my nostrils, i still see and feel swollen on the tip down the columella sometimes it even tingles like it is numb. I wake every morning obsessed in hoping it has gone done significantly throughout the night. I think i look better but not a few thousand dollars better. I am glad in a ironic way that alot of us are going through the same thing. Not that I want you or I to go through this but it seems to be part of the normal process. My wife told me to continue to be patient, because she went through some disappointment when she got her breast done where the implant wouldn't drop. But i told her it was not the same, this i can't hide with a bra and tshirt. I will keep you updated, hopefully i have good news.
I got my surgery done in middle of march. The first week swelling was maximum, next week it reduced, and i feel its been the same since past few days...not even a spec of difference. Also one side is elevaed more than the other. I wonder if it is really swelling, beacuse i dont feel any pain and if i touch it,it looks like a bone there. And the tip feels as a wide as it used to be before surgery....My doctor says everything will settle down in 3 -6 months and if its really only a waiting game, i wish this time passes really soon..and ofourse the frying pan hit look is always there....

Hi - I had rhino surgery on March 25th. It's been 3 weeks today and I can't even look in the mirror. My nose is so large, I don't quite understand how this happens. I thought the whole purpose was for your nose to get smaller! I have a high bridge with no slope and I just noticed today a bump on the top that was never there before. My tip is swollen and big. Everyone has said they can't notice a difference at all. I do notice that my hook is gone, it is more pointier now. Just embarrassed to go through what i did and there's no major difference. Going back to the doctor next week - he keeps saying it looks beautiful but I'm starting to think he's blind!
Hi there! I know exactly how you feel. I had my nose done almost five months ago and and my nose is not what I expected. My doctor kept on telling me that it was swollen until about a week ago, he finally admitted that it's not swelling. I asked for a small slightly scooped up nose but instead I got long straight big nose that has weird looking bump on the top. It has been very difficult for me to accept this because this whole time I was hoping that it was just swelling. Thankfully, I am having a revision done to fix my nose next month. I suggest for you to wait at least 3 months to make sure it is not swelling and then ask your doctor about revision surgery as an option to change your nose. Sometimes it is a better idea to have an open revision under general anesthesia which could help improve an overall shape of your nose rather than just tip revision which is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation. I am wishing you best of luck and I hope your problem will be resolved soon.
I had surgery done on 3/9/09. They fixed my deviated septum as well as reduced and lifted the tip. I also had the "beak" thing going on so he brought down the bridge as well as straightened and lowered my nose profile.I had quite a bit of work done so I guess swelling is to be expected. One month later the tip is still swollen and so is the bridge. There is a little hump there and it is still sore so I think it is still swollen. My profile is a lot better now minus the little hump on the bridge. Hopefully it goes down as time goes on.According to my surgeon this is normal. For now I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He says to give it 6 months.Easy for him to say.I am pretty happy with the results so far. Hopefully I feel the same way 6 months from now.He also said that blood doesn't flow through the tip very much so it takes longer to heal.
