I bought Manuka Honey and smeared it on my face. I left it on for 30 minutes. It felt wonderful. I have Almond oil and Oregano oil as well for moisturizing but, I found for me after I wash my face ( lightly scrubbing with a soft cloth to loosen the dead skin ) I put my miracle cream on my face which is Cetapihil face moisturizer with 50 SPF. It feels fantastic. My skin is so smooth and it doesn't feel tight at all. I found if I do this routine every night my Seborrheic Dermatitus has been much easier to live with on a daily basis.

just curious what woman who wear makeup use to cleanse their faces? I wear a little concealer to cover the red spots but when I wash at night it only smears the dead skin and flakes around. Using a harsher cleanser only aggrevates my rosacea so its a catch 22. Ive tried the head and shoulders conditioner after and that hasnt helped in the least. Ive also recently experimented with an oil by trust nature called Dermessentials Oil. It had wonderful antifungal oils and I really thought it would help. I used it for several weeks and nothing. I dont know why my SD is so resistant. Mine is also on the sides of my face and inner cheeks. They appear as red plaques but are not dry. I have the dryness on my forhead, nose and chin so I'm almost wondering if these red plaques are SD or not.

I don't wear makeup anymore because of my SD. I had to adjust to the natural look. The dead skin and flakes you have to scrub them off. I was told never to scrub my face...WRONG...people with SD must get those dead skin cells off. I take St Ives Facial scrub and Olive oil put it on a rag and I scrub all of that loose skin away. Yes at first my face would be red but it all went away. after I scrub in the shower I dab my face dry and put on the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisterizer with sun block. It really does work. Once I got those flakes gone my face stopped itching. I do this every night and of course because I do this every night my skin stays clear of dead skin and flakes and feels great. The more you do this the less scrubbing you need to do.. And the redness is barely there anymore. i finally found what works for me. PLease try this. What have you got to lose...:-)

i know it sounds crazy but the seborrheic dermatitis microbes turn your body oil into soap! here is a lecture given by John Hovanesian MD of Harvard Eye. search youtube for "Dry Eye Treatment Part II, John Hovanesian MD Harvard Eye"

he starts to talk about it about 3 and a half minutes in. it explains a lot! it explains the soapy taste that i though meant i was leaving soap on me and it explains why the treatments on your face are not really effective. they are riding on top of the soap and the bacteria are protected by the soap! the bacteria are producing soap s**m on you and soap s**m is virtually impenetrable. before any treatment can be effective you must get the soap scrum off of you so the bacteria can be treated directly. i'm trying some natural soap s**m removal treatments like vinegar that are gentle enough for human skin.

the post by the guy who said that when he was running a lot he didn't have a problem makes me suspicious that what i have thought for quite a while is true, that it's not the sun that makes it better, it's the sweat. the extra sweat floats the soap off of you. mine always gets much worse the first week in September here in maine when the temperature suddenly gets 10 degrees cooler and doesn't recover because of a shift in the jet stream but the amount of sun is still the same.

Since seborrheic dermatitis is caused by yeasts and fungus one needs to create a hostile environment for these agents to get relief. There are many such methods, but the most inexpensive and skin friendly, yet effective treatment of seborrheic dermatitis must be Magnesium Sulphate AKA Epsom Salt applied at maximum strength. I.e. After taking a shower, dip moistened finger into Epsom Salt and  vigorously rub the affected skin till all grains of the salt have dissolved. The skin will revert to looking and feeling normal again as long as it remains impregnated by the Epsom Salt.

I had it for years on face upper lip, around nose, eyebrows also scalp & now I am cured 100% follow these steps :

1.Stopped drinking lager/light beers

2.Eat oranges/citrus fruit

3.Use Fractionated Coconut oil to moisturize

4.Increase vitamin c intake

5.High dose vitamin D3 5000IU daily

Thousands of yeasts & Lager contains type of yeast that seb derm feeds off.

Fractionated coconut oil has had the long chain fatty acids removed (oleic acid which again feeds seb derm) and has medium chain fatty acids (closest to natural sebum) antibacterial !

I live in UK

I come from China, i had this SD problem on my face since last Dec, it is really painful to have this problem on face. And it is said this problem will last a long time, maybe can't be cured for whole life:(

I studied a lot of things for SD in Chinese website, books and also i found this western website. Guess people comes from everywhere has same problem. Here, i would like to introduce my Chinese way to cure or help. Since am Chinese, i believe Chinese way can cure or stop this kind of long pain problem.

You can believe or don't believe, up to you! But if you want to get better or see result in a few days, don't try my way. Because my Chinese way takes a month at least which it depends on your SD condition.

1. Diet: Keep healthy diet, no alcohol, no seafood, no lamb, no beef, no mushroom, no pepper, less fried food, no garlic, no ginger, etc(strong taste food), less oily food, less meat, less salty, less or no sweet food. More vegetables and fruits everyday. Better be vegetarian:) Guess it is hard for western people.

2. Taking Chinese tradional medicine if there is good one around you. It takes a long time to get cured for drinking those bitter medicine water.

3. Buying 艾篙/艾草from Chinese medicine shop, boil those plants for 20minutes. After cold, put those plants water on your face for half hour each time for 2 or 3times a day. Also, use those plants water to wash your feet, put your feet in hot medicine water for half hour every night before you go to sleep. Be careful, keep those medicine water warm temperature when your feet inside. Cold water not helpful.

4. Exercise: Running or other exercise for half hour at least everyday. During those half hour exericise, make sure your face sweat, it helps open your face pore, because it doesn't work very well since your face has SD problem.

5. Salt: Wash your face everyday by soft cleaning cream or soup one time. And put some salt in warm water to clean your face morning and evening. Make sure the salt water on your face for a few mintues.

6. If you feel your face very dry or itchy, please use some special cream, or VE oil, or VE cream, or good olive oil on your face.

7. Drink lots of water everyday.

8. Sleep: sleep early, get up early. (better sleep before 11pm, get up before 8am) Good sleep is best for recovering your face skin.

Currently, i am working on all those methods. It helps lot. I am sure i will be cured soon. It might be too complicated for you westerners, but if you tried everything which not help, why don't you try my way.

You don't say which "steps" you are referring to. Dietary changes may help some people, but topical applications are the preferred method to control Seborrheic Dermatitis, AKA Cradle Cap, the usual prescription being Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% which however is a Steroid with nasty long-term side-effects. The cheapest and most effective topical treatment is still a vigorous application of skin-friendly Magnesium Sulphate AKA Epsom Salts or Bath Salts, available in North America for about a Dollar a pound in Dollar or Bulk Stores. It is virtually unknown in Asia where Alum is more common, it being used as a deodorant, and which may also be effective.

I tried many different methods to fix my problem, but which didn't work for me. The docter gave the usual prescription can only help for short time, then it will come back again. It is really pain for me.
Many things i saw here which doesn't exist in China, i guess i can find bath salts in shop.
But if my SD problem get worse, i will try to use Alum, but i never seen them before in Beijing.
My wish is to cure this SD problem. Even it said it can only be controlled.
I am taking Chinese herbal medicine currently. That is the most best popular way to help this kind of slow killing disease.
I don't know if any westerners has been cured.
But different people has different sign for SD.
I will keep trying my methods, see what will happen. Kind of frustrated for being sick like this problem.

Hello guys I am suffering also from Seborrheic Dermatitis and I tried everything. I am not an Md but because of my experience I have come to understand what it causes. Basically it is due to the  foods that what we eat and the toxin that our body cannot red it off. Try to avoid eating too much protein it is responsible for rocketing our uric acid. Control hyper acidity, and  try to pooh regularly (everyday)  its a way of getting rid off toxins in our body. Our stool contains toxins, if we didn't get able to red it off, our body will absorb that toxins.

the best thing we can do to prevent it is we have to cleanse our colon everyday. Try to take "Nutri Cleanse" it's a herbal toxin eliminator cleansing our body and see for your self in just 2 to 3 days your face will clear up from redness and the flaking will be reduced continue to it and it will disappear.

Triderma and Aveeno (eczema lotion) work wonders. Aloe is very soothing, especially if applied cold. Baths with colloidal oatmeal are also very soothing. But what truly did it for me was using Scalpicin, with 1% hydrocortisone. The redness, flaking, and itch went away in a matter of days. And it didn't take long.

Scalpicin is sold OTC and its around $8 or so. I truly recommend it.

I've had this condition for years and still struggle. ive gone through heaps of cleansers, moisturisers, shampoos... nothing seems to work. Im an active person and never saw any relief in symptoms. Although, for some reason when I increase my intake of citrus fruits, the redness does clear up. But then again, it all comes back. *sigh* I'm over this. The weird thing is this is suppose to be hereditary, but no one in my family history has it. I have an anxiety disorder so that may be the key culprit.

Hear is a recipe for a scrub that will clear  your face for a day or two, so you need to use it daily: 2 cups brown sugar (lightly packed)1/2 cup olive oil1/4 cup honey1 teaspoon milk.  I just read on another web site, and a doctor was suggesting to use oil of oregano (found on web or at GNC ect.) she said it helped on patients that did not see results with steroid creams.  I'm going to try this.
