I have battled the same on and off for about 14 years, alcohol and diet are the biggest factors. Take care of the liver, SD goes away. It is a curse but manageable. GL people, there is no miracle that I have found, this guest has my vote. I always look JIC something is vew out there.

So, I too have used head and Shoulders to treat Seb Dem.. I actually only realized that it helps when I ran out of Money and ran my normal body and face wash. it turns out it has something to do with the ingrediant zinc pyrithione.

This may not work for everyone, but this is how I keep my Seb Dem under control.

1.) If I feel like I am starting to break out I wash with water that is colder than room temp, but not super cold water. Once I do that I apply Curel (Fragrance free) which is like something I can not live without. Wait like 6 hours do it all again. I would continue this for 3 days. Also, avoid HOT showers as they will pretty much make your skin feel like its on FIRE!

2) if Skin is under control take a daily shower with cooler water and wash your face with head and shoulders and then once you are done with your shower and face is dry apply Curel. Before bed wash your face again and apply Curel.

There are foods and drinks you should also avoid which include coffee, anything that has alcohol, and any thing with SATURATED FATS.

That's my two cents. I'm not a doctor... just a person with a Seb Dem. :)

Hope this helps someone.

Apparently my 'R' wasn't working lol. Seb Derm not Seb Dem!

Hello,

I am currently pregnant and have developed pregnancy induced SD. My derm suggested using H&S too, so I have started rubbing a small bit of the conditioner into the affected areas in the mornings and evenings. I have been doing this for about 5 days and so far no improvement. How long did it take for you to see results and what did you use to moisturize?

Thanks,
Meriwether

I have been dealing with this for at least 6 months. It started on my chin for no known reason, took me 2 months to dry it out with alcohol! Skin was so dry, but it finally got rid of it. It`s back now, and worse, both sides of nose, side of mouth and chin. You mentioned neurological disorder. I have had HORRIBLE stress for a good while now. What causes this, no Dr ever said - except one said maybe stress. How are we to CURE this if we don`t really know the cause????

Okay, so, I finally figured out what works for me, and I hope this will help someone else out there too. I'm 25 years old, female, and I've been dealing with this nonsense for a little over two years. It's especially bad on the tip and sides of my nose, an area of my forehead at my hairline, my ears, and my scalp, my left elbow (which I've just given up on), aaand *super embarrassing* on my left labia (which seems to clear up with regular aloe application, but always comes back in full force. Ugh.)

I've tried everything... ointments from the derm doctor, expensively marketed lotions and scrubs, tanning, you name it. Lately I've been experimenting with more face regimens though, because my wedding is in 7 months and I soooo do not want to have these giant red scaly bits of nastiness in all of my photos.

Anyway, here's my miracle solution for face flare ups:

I wash my face, make sure there is no makeup residue or anything. I don't think it really matters what you use as long as it gets your face clean, but I use St. Ives apricot scrub. Then I use one of those handheld Microdermabrasion systems (I think mine is Neutrogena, got it on amazon around $18-$20.) Then I apply a nice thick layer of Nuxe 24 Hour Soothing and Rehydrating Fresh Mask. I found out about this magical stuff through a monthly subscription service that sends different cosmetic samples each month. I'm just now running out of the sample size and the lowest price I can find on amazon is $29 for 1.7oz, but I'm stocking up. I've probably spent a few hundred already on stuff that doesn't work anyway.

I followed tgat routine, and put the mask on at the height of a bad flare up around a week ago, about 8pm. By 1030pm, the redness was almost completely gone and the skin was completely smooth, no scales at all. I was ecstatic. So I slapped on another layer and high tailed it to bed. I woke up, and on my grandmother's grave, the scales were 100% gone and only a very slight reddish tinge was left.

I started doing this every other day, and on days in between, I just make sure I have plenty of lotion/serum to keep my skin hydrated so the scales don't reappear. I'm now just about 100% cleared up on my face and praying it stays this way at least until the wedding.

As far as the seb on my scalp, haven't really found anything that works yet. I use the medicated shampoo 3x per week, but no results. I've tried the Head and Shoulders version, which I honestly think is the same c**p as the medicated shampoo from the derm except my insurance won't pay for it. I try to deep condition my scalp 1-2x per week, and I notice a slight improvement then, but nothing has gotten rid of it. If anyone has any suggestions for the scalp scales and flaking, I'll literally try anything.

Hope this helps someone out there!

OMG I literally jumped out of my seat when I saw Head and Shoulders conditioner (H&HC) as your answer! I had Dermo (Its what me and my twin brother call this F******* curse) for literally 5 years from 17-22. I went to dermatologists; got laser, dermo roller, peels and they kept saying wash more. I would wash 6 times a day and still be red raw and flake over my face and in my fringe and sideburns . Until one day I ran out of shampoo and only had head and shoulders conditioner for a few days and my Dermo healed in my hair and haven't had Dermo there in 10 years

My face was a lot more difficult but I managed beat it with clean living and reducing carbs, making my own Kefir and using salicylic acid from Paula's choice to reduce sebum build up in the nose area.

Now ill explain why some products work and some don't as I hope it helps any who reads this H&HC contains Zinc Pyrithone which kills yeast ( specifically Malassezia) but there is a physical action you need take into account as well. If you use harsh products that over dry your skin you do two things

1) You remove the acid mantel on your skin where your skin is naturally slightly acidic. You cannot get rid of all yeast on the face as they live in fat/oil and they have biofilms to protect them, if you literally removed all the oil from your face it would be like parched paper.

2) When you skin is dry you inhibit Malassezia growth but your sebum becomes more sticky as the skin cells flake more into the pore and makes a sticker substance. What this does is block the pores and the pore bulb swells massively with oil (That's why sometimes so much comes out squeezing black heads) and the yeast get in there and party and your immune system comes in and basically starts speeding up cell turnover to get rid of the infected cells.

So basically you get into a dangerous game of washing, getting temporary relief and then it coming back full force. H&HC inhibits the Malassezia but doesn't remove the acid mantel so you keep your acidic surface.

Don't use products with laurel sulphate (or any sulphate) as these dry the skin really bad. Even if you don't feel like your skin has become dry on micro level you skin is flaking more into is pores. It's also why a lot of people swear that washing gives them more black heads.
I really hope people try this out.

For the nose use an acid
Apple cider vinegar and Salicylic acid are amazing. I use the paul's choice everyday and I don't have any blackheads as my sebum is more viscous from the acid mixing in and I have no Dermo.

I'm not sure for people who get this further on their scalp and couldn't be related to more of a immune deficiency so I recommend Kefir.

I wont always be on this but PM me and I will eventually get to anyone, if they want to discuss anything. I have literally tried most things.

Good luck !

Hi Wayne,
Is this still working for you and if so which H&S brand do you use?

Hey, I have this condition for over 15 years now and only a couple of years ago i managed to get it under control. I use very small amount of natural dandruff shampoo 'Nizoral' to wash affected areas on my face, then I wait till affected areas dry free of moisture and then apply a good amount of 'Lucas Pawpaw' ointment also only affected areas on my face, followed by applying natural moisturiser cream 'Cetraben' Emollient for the rest of my face excluding affected areas. I do this twice a day (in the mornings & the evenings, just before going to sleep). I've been to specialist dermatologist countless times, but nothing seem to help long term. This is a combination of what my dermatologist suggested and what I discovered throughout the years myself. This combination seems to keep it under control and I don't feel that it a problem any more. Also, you need to change your pillow cover regularly, so they stay as clean as possible. Try it, these are all natural products. Hope it helps

Yes. Drinking most definitely intensifies it. I have to step up my regiment when drinking which is relatively often iv managed to deal with it for 45 years.
