Hello everyone,
I have never posted on one of these blogs before so here it goes. I have been suffering with SD on the face for over 2 years and it really annoyed me to the point where it affected my everyday life. Through countless hours of research online, I finally found a way to control my SD on the face. Every morning and night, I wash my face with Head and Shoulders Conditioner. This keeps the SD at bay and does turn my face red like the regular H&S shampoo does. I also will spot treat the dry areas with Neutrogena healthy skin face lotion (Alpha hydroxy). Hope this helps someone out there. I had tried 30-40 different medications (RX and OTC) before this and nothing worked this well. Give it a try and see what happens.

I have SB since I have been about 11 years old and now I am 32, after all this time I have found something that reaaly works. I have CeraVe moisturizing face wash which can be purchased at CVS, Walgrrens or Rite Aid to cleanse my face, as a toner/astringent I used organic apple cider vinigar which I purchase and the supermarket and then I apply hydrocortisone. Once I started using the CeraVe the skin irritation was gone in about 24/48 hrs.
Anti dandruff shampoo really works for seborrheic dermatitis. I tried Head and shoulders, and the dermatitis on my face stopped itching and burning, it began to dry up actually
Hello, I'm receiving the same problem but just in a minor level for about years until recently. It got to the point where it was unbearable and I got this cream called Cortizone "cream with aloe" and it has 1% hydrocortisone. I had horrifying itchy yellow flakes just about all over my nose and I basically refused to leave the house. After about 2 days I saw a lot of improvement cause it's only pink now. Today is my third day using it and even though the pink still bothers me, it's not as apparent as before. I'm torn between continuing using this product or to use another type of rash product to reduce the pinkness. I did some internet research about hyrdrocortisone and I recall something about your body being accustomed to it, which I'd try to avoid (just a forewarning). Hope this helps, and I advise to use it only if you really need it.
yes!! I don't drink, but even two here and there I notice a flareup or lack of sleep as well.
I've been struggling with SD for years and years and it's a real pain in the arse. It started for me in my mid 20s, I'd never had any skin problems or anything before. A small rash started in my hair line and slowly enveloped pretty much my whole face over the period of a couple of months.
After going to various doctors being treated for every skin condition going and finally getting a SD diagnosis i was prescribed steroids, topical and oral, which at first help but didn't really provide a long term solution. Using a steady stream of steroids wrecks your skin, i got quite a lot of acne especially after bad flare ups. Topical steroids are helpful during these periods for a lot of people i'm not writing them off they just weren't suitable for me.
I stumbled on to the use of anti dandruff shampoo and started using it as a face wash diluted with warm water. IT WORKS WONDERS! After all the messing around with various medicines this is the best of the lot. After the inital experimenting with it I found several things.
1. On inital use it causes stinging and sore face with redness in the effected areas which lasts around 24 hours. This calms down as the condition clears up.
2. It's a full time job, look at it as preventative. If you stop yes it comes back as SD is a life long pain in the backside :-D
3. It drys the skin out quite a lot, i found that if i use a gentle moisturiser it's ok and doesn't affect the SD at all.
My routine is to mix wet my face and head completely then apply a small amount of head and shoulders and lather. I leave that on for 5-10 mins before removing with warm water. I do this every other day and use just water and a gentle moisturiser the rest of the time to avoid having my skin dry out.
If you're starting treatment you'll notice an intimidate improvement in your general skin condition and after 2/3 day the redness will pass and spot subside.
I sort of felt compelled to post as this is something i struggled with for many years. I do hope this post helps. :-D

hi....i have been trying Capasal Shampoo as a face wash...thinking it maybe a little harsh. What shampoos are generally recommended for SD?? ty
I have had this condition on my face, in particular my eyebrows, sides of nose, lower cheeks and chin. It is easily controlled with hydrocortisone creams and a mix of dandruff shampoos.
But after 20 years I had enough. I know there is some underlying cause and had some success with TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine) in the past. Lucky to live by Chinatown in NYC I found a reputable herb doctor/shop. I tried a few courses and nothing. But this time around I was determined and the doctor said it could be months to clear such a long term case. After a month it started to get better. After 2 months it was gone. I stayed on the herbs for 6 months and a miracle cure was found!
Last month I went off the herbs as they are expensive and within weeks my SD returned with a vengeance. I'm back on the herbs and will stay on them as long as necessary. The condition in TCM is known as damp heat, and my kidney energy needs tonification. If this is of any interest to anyone I strongly urge you to find a practitioner of TCM near your area and treat this condition internally.

Hi,
I am suffering from SB for 5 years now, and it is less in summer & worst in Winters. I have been using Ketacanazole which gives some relief, say for 1-2 weeks. Again it appears. I am affected on ends of mouth, upper lip area, face, temples, behind the ears, & chin areas, apart from the scalp (esp at teh back of the head).
Hair dyes aggravate the problem.
And some foods like egg, pepper, pickles, brinjals, arbi, also aggravate the condition.
Also consumption of liquor like whisky, rum etc aggravate the condition.
The skin condition is very disgusting, wretched feeling due to itching, redness & breaking of skin, formation of flakes, leaking of puss like
water secretion, etc.
I have realised that there is no absolute cure for thsi, as I could only reduce some of the effects of Sb, but it reappears in a few weeks.
Some drugs which help are Ketacanazole & betamethasone, and coco butter cream, & caladryl lotion, also help in affected areas.
I have been treated by Homoeoathy doctors for 2 years, w/o any cure.

Corners of the mouth is more likely a fungal infection. Nystatin ointment is what you want. You dentist can diagnose and write script. It's fairly common.
I have seb. derm. on the sides of my nose, on the tops of my cheeks and around my mouth. It started out around my nose, Ive been to several dermatologists, tried Neutrogena (Salisic Acid) which completely dried out my skin, Hydro-cortisone (which can thin your skin with prolonged use), Ketocozanol, CeraVe and other various topical creams. Nothing worked for me.
When I searched for a gentler facial soap, I was recommended Kiehl's Baby Gentle Cleansing Milk. Ive been using it for a few weeks now and have found my face more hydrated and less red. I use Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough Replenishing Serum 3 6 9 and Caudalie Moisturizing Cream-Mask Face and Eyes, these products I use twice a day everyday and I never have to re-apply moisturizer to the effected areas. Its not a cure and everyones skin is different, what works for me may not work for you.
What I can suggest from my experiences is to find a gentle cleanser that will not strip your skin of moisture (it should NOT feel tight or flake when you get out of the shower), try moisturizing products that are organic or natural (Any added chemicals, alcohols or fragrances may cause a flare up), go to skin care stores and ask questions. I actually went to Sephora and told the girls of my skin condition. They gave me samples of loads of products (that last for 2 weeks or so) which was great cause I found what worked for me before I committed to buying anything!
I hope this info helps someone. Dont give up.

I had this problem for years and I always knew what it was seb. derm. but the doctors could never diagnose me properly. They said it was roscea when all along I knew it was seb. derm. My nose used to be very red especially in the folds and I tried Ketakonazole but it used to make my skin more red and dry than before I used it. It affected my confidence for years and really held me back.
I now use head and shoulders conditioner on my face as a treatment cream, I don't wash it off and it acts like a moisturiser. You can wash your face in soap like any normal person is supposed to and then just apply the conditioner. Don't use head and shoulders shampoo as this is too harsh on the skin. Sorry I haven't been the best at typing this I'm in a hurry. Anyway I would love to hear from people who have read my method, tried it and seen improvements. By the way I have had no seb. derm. for over 2 yrs now since using this method.
