I was diagnosed by my derm as having SD on my face about a month ago.  I've had SD on scalp for more than 50 years with only minor inconvenience.  However, now having facial itching and redness and was prescribed corticosteroid cream but haven't used.

Have read all the posts on this thread and found them informative.

About the time my SD on face began I was back in our community swimming pool doing laps.  The pool had been closed for the winter.

I can't find anything much on chlorine's effect on SD.  Does anyone have any information on this topic.

Would much appreciate.

Thanks,

Rob

i have been dealing with SD for over 20 years. i kept it under control by prescription topical creams or ointments. i mostly recently used protopic for many years which obviously isn't a good idea. my wife is almost positive that the protopic lead to the liver problems i had approx. 6 months ago that were almost very serious. so she forced me stop using it which scared me to think it would break out and i had no relief in sight. i tried a couple of different things but what seems to be working very well so far is california baby calendula cream. i used it all over my face every other day or so and it has kept the SD in check as much as the protopic and anything else i used. i also use a natural type face moisturizer every now and then also. but give the calendula a try and hopefully it helps any of you as much as me. very thankful and blessed to be able to keep it in check without a steroid cream.

I too am being treated for SB. My dermatologist has had me on Claritin, Singular, Ketacanazole and Elidel cream. These things help the symptoms but the redness, itching and burning seem to come back in a cycle every 8-9 days or so. On my last visit I complained how dry and tight my face felt. She gave me a sample of CeraVe moisturizing lotion. After using it for a couple days my face has cleared up dramatically. It's been over 2 weeks and no flare up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I brought AM and PM CeraVe at Walmart.

I use to have the dry skin too from SB. After reading many comments on sb. I followed someones comment to use head and shoulders directly on the affected area and to also use coal tar. I found that head and shoulders stopped the inflammation. However it didn't stop the flaking. I took someones advice and tracked down where I could buy coal tar moisturiser from to see if this would stop the flaking. If you're from Australia there's a product called psor assist. It's a John Plunkett product. I found this product in a Terry White chemist. I've been using it for only 4 days and i've noticed a huge difference. The flaking has stopped and it's helped clear the sb. The only advice I'd recommend is not to go outside with this product as direct sunlight will cause redness and sunburn. Oh and the smells not that fantastic. Prior to this I've been to both doctors and dermatologists and none of them helped. I'm thankful to the person who recommended trying this, so I'm passing on the same info to hopefully help others. Do a google search on either coal tar or psor assist cream.

I have had SD on my face, between my and in my eyebrows for years now. My derm told me to use an anti-dandruff shampoo to wash my face with. I do so once a day and wash my scalp every other day with anti dandruff shampoo, as its very harsh on removing hair color. Stress is def an influence on my flare ups. It seems to work, but in the early days I realized all to quickly that picking or trying to remove the scales makes it worse. Make up will cover it up for awhile, but as the day goes on "cracks" seem to appear between the eyebrows. And skin issues def run in my family as my dad has eczema and my daughter has alopecia. But as I experience anticubital pain bilateraly each night in my sleep I am fearful of it being related to a neuro problem :(

@ Caitlin, I totally understand and sympathize! I am using glutathione liposomal (take on empty stomach, don't eat anything for a half an hour afterwards), and it used to keep my skin completely clear. Now my chin is just doing its own thing, and I don't know what to do. I recently ordered Phytoceramides to see if that will help as I read testimonials to it helping dry skin. I don't want to use hydrocortisone creams as they can cause side effects. I'm now treating my seb derm spots with very diluted apple cider vinegar (5 TBS non-chlorinated water to 1 TBS of ACV). I used to have really beautiful clear skin, and now I look like I have adult acne. I hate SB!

I have had SD since 1990 at University.  Tried steroid creams, anti fungals which controlled itching but not burning and flaky skin. Nothing from doctor worked. I have flaking and itching on eyelids / brows, scalp, forehead, side of nose, under eyes. The stinging and burning is very bad.  A friend recommended Neutrogena facial cleansing bar, basically a clear soap and it worked. It controls the SD.  Lather face, leave for minute or two on face (best in shower) then wash off. Re-lather and rinse, whilst I would quite vigorously rub the itchy, scaly areas of face, eye brows etc to rub away all the itchy, scaly skin.  As soap does not leave a residue, it would allow me to do this and remove the scaly skin.  This would stop itching and burning.  I used once a day and it worked in a day or two.  Big problem is I live in UK and Neutrogena has just discontinued the soap here.  Disaster for me as no other product, including Neutrogena's other range works. But available in USA and Canada.  If you can get it, try it, it may help you. Was a massive benefit for me.  I am trying to find if it is available in Europe or a substitute. Even Neutrogena Uk can't answer that, they really are a  pretty unhelpful bunch.

I was having red skin and extreme flaking around my nose spreading to my cheeks due to SD and my dermatologist prescribed me a cream that worked amazingly well -

a protopic .1% Tacrolimus monohydrate ointment. Has anyone else used this? I just put it on every few weeks if the stuff is flaring up. The only thing is if I drink any alcohol the cream makes my face go as red as a traffic light, even if I stopped using it a few days previously

I'm trying to find something that doesn't cause this side-effect (sometimes I have to socialise with clients through drinking alcohol). I've been thinking about using Zinc Pyrithione creams - I've noticed here that some people here say you can build up a resistance. Is this true? Is a normal mild facewash any use?
