sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

Please check your BP : High BP causes abnormal functioning of blood vessels. Please remember that our blood vessels are NOT like plastic tubes ..... High BP will inevitably result in DEFORMITY of blood vessels (in brain in your cases) Fortunately, these pain will also disappear if you get BP down
hi i have a similar problem the pain comes and goes every 10 second or so, i havent check with my doctor as yet. am trying to do some home treatment. i just started feeling this pain 4 days ago. it feels like contraction.
SOUNDS LIKE OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA. VERY PAINFUL!
I just searched for "pain above and behind right ear" and found hundreds reporting same problem, each with a different doctor reaching a different conclusion for cause and treatment, and few getting any results. What I found at the following h  ***post is edited by moderator *** web addresses not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use lists many causes. My migraine headaches are usually above right eye and behind right ear, feeling like a rod stabbed in above my right eye and sticking out behind my right ear. This time it was only behind and slightly above right ear, and sharper severe intense pain than normal migraine. So I did the search. Probably is a migraine variation. Applying a hot washcloth with pressure to the area slightly reduces that pain for me. By the way, Extra Strength Excedrin and Excedrin Migraine are same formula. They got in trouble with FDA when Excedrin Migraine came out for a higher price than normal Extra Strength Excedrin [and there is no normal strength Excedrin] and implied it is a different formula. It's the same ingredients of Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine. The Aspirin improves the blood flow and makes the delivery of the Acetaminophen more effective, as the Caffeine gives a boost of energy to make up for the loss of energy to pain. Pain uses up energy. Sometimes the Caffeine in beverages can reduce my headaches. Goody's Headache Powders now has the same "Extra Strength" formula but with more Aspirin than is in Excedrin. I have to be careful to not take too much Aspirin because of a history of bleeding stomach and esophagus ulcers. I also sometimes get "hypoglycemic headaches" with hypoglycemia low blood glucose, opposite of diabetic, which feel like migraine headaches and require different treatment such as a high protein meal like white meat turkey. I also get ocular migraines, which is not pain but visual distortions, like flashes of lightning burned into field of vision and floating gashes in field of vision. Those usually happen just before a migraine headache hits, and in my case happens when my hemoglobin count is low, being in need of more iron for iron deficiency anemia, and from internal bleeding. Google Search Images for "Map of Metabolism" to see the the diagram, like a wiring diagram, to see how it is all connected. If you were in electronics repair like me then you might use a wiring diagram to trace the cause of a problem and then fix it. The same is true with this. The Map of Metabolism shows how complicated life is, how life actually functions, and how it is possible for life to exist.
I have been suffering with this affliction for many years. I am a 22 year old female who has been getting these sudden jolt like electric shock pains in that can shoot from behind my ear to my temple and to the back of my head.Sometimes shoots into my jaw as well. They come in clusters and can last anywhere from 3 to 30 seconds and the pain is very intense. I have been getting many this month. I had a few clusters every few seconds for 2 hours today.. I first noticed them at a very young age. I have had MRI's in the head and cervical spine and no trigeminal neuralgia was found. I have researched these symptoms and I have found the idea of " Ice pick headaches " You can google it but there is little information on the topic. It is comforting to have an answer to symptoms but no treatment.
I've had a similar problem for a few years - right side of head behind the ear - shooting pain from time to time. For me, I think that I was able to zero in on the problem after I spoke to my new Ob/Gyn. He is not a neurologist but he is considered to be one of the best doctors in my area. He asked me how I usually sleep. My answer was 'on my right side'. He said that it could be related to a nerve on the right side of my head. I have since started sleeping on my back(for the past year) and the shooting pain never reoccured.
Dear Tina Hi Tina, I'm a 21 year old male, its been a couple days since I've been getting hard headaches ob both sides of my head and behind my head, I'm very worried and it's bothering me:(
Knee.coli .. recently my salivary and thyroid glands became swollen, within two days that sudden sharp electic shock pain started.. i do take adderall
im a 24 yr old male ,i've been getting these types of pains for the past year and a half, ive anxiety scince 17 and now almost 24. i also clench my jaw quite a bit ,especially while i sleep, and had sinus issues for the past few years as well.about 6 months back they started to worsen , i got a ct on my head when they became very apparent and sharp because i thought i might be related to a brain issue or aneurysm, but it wasnt , i also seen a neurologist got a nerve test conducted , aswell as a follow up cat scan.nothing was wrong. during this time i was back and forth between my gp's and ear nose and throat doctors, after having a simple blood test done i found out that my vit b12 level was below normal range, and i was borderline anemic. after 6 months and 10 b12 injections the pains and sensations have disappeared but i sometimes get the odd one now and again, jaw clenching, stress on the body will make them more apparent, there were also other symptoms i was experiencing. fatigue, dissiness, and a mild depression with hightened generalized anxiety,. these have also decreased especially if you find out your problem and make a solution, see your gp and get a blood test its simple and b12 injection are very cheap to do, b12 has to also be taken with vit d. this may be your problem
I too have been experiencing this issue all this week. Was going to go to the doctor this morning and then because I took advil when I awoke, didn't have any pain until about an hour ago.  And here it is again.  On Monday the whole right side of my face was very sensitive and then the sharp pains behind the ear intermittetly come and go.  They are not severe - It could be my reading glasses as they are fairly new and very heavy.  it could be what you all are saying and possibly vitamin B as I do take multi-vitamins but have been for years and never had this issue.  I guess I'm off to the doctor to find out.
Please email me. I'm interested in finding the cause of this. It's been going on for over a year now for me. Pure torture.   ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed***Please read our Terms of Use
i have a chip tooth with filling and i have a sharp pain over my right ear and i am noticing a pan down my left neck.  is it my nerves that is causing the pain.
There are many different symptoms listed here, and as many different diagnoses for these symptoms. I've had occipital neuralgia for 10 years and the symptoms are quite specific: burning, stabbing, crawling, tingling, electric shock waves, and a deep bruised sensation behind the ear, radiating outwards and Upwards to the back of the head (lesser occipital nerves). Headaches and electric shocks at the back of the head are also present (greater occipital nerve). Treatment includes medication (Neurontin, nortriptyline, Cymbalta) and pain relievers (Vicodin, Percocet, morphine, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants). Pain clinic treatment includes trigger point injections, Botox, nerve blocks). Symptoms are always present, but vary in severity depending on treatment and flareups. Other problems listed here vary from tension headaches, tmj, Trigeminal neuralgia, muscle kinks. The best thing to do is see your gp and a neurologist to get a correct diagnosis and MRIS, cat scans, bloodwork done as necessary. Trust me, I looked on forums for answers when I first got chronic pain. you'll find all kinds of answers that are not what you actually have. See a doctor and then seek treatment as needed.
My girl friend has had this for about a week now. I suggested trying nasal decongestion drops a couple of days ago but she said no cus her nose dont feel blocked. Finally convinced her to try today and an hour later her pain has gone. Must have been blocked sinuses. Worth a try people they only cost 3 - 4 pounds. We used otrivine. Best of luck
I have a bad "electric shock" type pain behind my left ear. I have often wondered if it could be caused by an interference in vibrations or sound wave or something put out by HAARP or whatever else...it is very painful and jolts me for a second and then is gone for a couple mins and returns..literally like an electric shock! Makes me bounce my head and grab the spot it happens at...no relief from my muscle relaxers or pain meds. I do have degenerative disc disease in my neck...possibly a vertebrae pressing on a nerve or something? Glad we have the same thought. I recently started dilantin and it did not help at all.
