Adverse reaction to seafood and alcohol

JUST found the below info on another page, thought it might help....
The problem you are suffering from when combining certain seafoods and acohol is a toxic histamine reaction. Some people that have a shortage of, or an insufficient activity of the enzymes needed to deal with histamine in their bodies, can react badly, even violently to a meal of histamine-rich foods. These foods include certain seafoods (most usually shellfish), certain fungi / mushrooms, MSG, etc., etc. Worse yet, is the fact that this reaction can also occur with foods, food products, and /or spirts which promote an increase of histamine within the body. There are a number of these foods which can act to trigger a reaction and these trigger foods vary from person to person. The most common trigger appears to be alcohol. The “why” to all this is the fact that histamine is a critical matabolite and neurotransmitter which activates to defend against foreign cell matter in our bodies. The trigger foods cause the body to release potentially dangerous and even dangerous amounts of histamine. Also, alcohol and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase are important to dealing with the amounts of histamines in our bodies. So alcohol, especially in people that lack the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, causes these people to be particularly susceptable to a reaction since drinking alcoholic spirits stimulates the prodution of histamine in the body.Charlie D. / Computerguy

I feel that as time goes on, my reactions get more sensitive. Has anyone experienced this? If I'm in a room with shellfish, or seafood, and I have a drink... then it's game over. I'll be sick the whole night then. I can tell when the reaction is going to happen, too. I start with the shivers, and within an hour I'm praying to the porcelin throne. Has anyone found any kind of medicine that helps wth the reaction? I took Benadryl once, but it gave no relief.

I am a registered dietitian too and learned through several bad experiences that I can't have a single alcoholic beverage and eat shellfish. I get migraines and stomach issues if I combine the two. It was great to hear other folks experience this phenomenon
Just to let you know, you are not alone. My girlfriend and i had shrimp last night and about an hour later we had glass of wine. In the morning her skin got red. We are now trying Chlorfenamine.

You are my saviour. I have just cooked prawn and in the past I used to be allergic to prawns. This clarify my decision for not drinking alcohol incase I have the reaction. Thanks
Yesterday ate crab linguine with about 3 glasses of white wine during the course of the evening; started to see double and felt awful, but managed not to be sick. Crawled upstairs to bed! OK in morning. Last time it was scallops - I now know I have an issue to be avoided!
Last weekend I fainted, blacked out and then slept for 14 hours. Prior to this I had only eaten three prawns and a raw oyster. I don't really eat seafood, but thought I'd give it another shot as I had friends over. I was also drinking alcohol - had 5 standard drinks over 5 hours. After the seafood all of a sudden I couldn't see properly, felt faint and that is about all I can remember. I was found by friends slumped on a lounge (I can't even remember getting there) and they then carried me to bed. I went to the doctors a few days later and she said it was because I drank too much, which I didn't. I'm so glad I found this, because I honestly thought something was wrong with me.
Glad I found this site. For the second time in 6 months I had a violent reaction to lobster and Wine. After an hour of eating became dizzy, vomiting and weak. Barely able to walk. The first time I thought it was food poisoning but it is too coincidental. Never again.
Hi all.. well I made a seafood broth last night and I added two cups of dry white wine to if.. within 5 hrs I was sick ?? Hi,
I’m 52 and female.
I was out the other night and had a few chocolate martinis.
The last thing I remember was eating raw oysters.
The next thing I remember was regaining consciousness behind the wheel of my truck...which was disabled and surrounded by police.
I was miraculously uninjured but completely confused.
I remember absolutely nothing that happened in between.
I couldn’t even keep water down all that next day.
This has never ever happened to me before.
It scared the living daylights out of me!
Also...this was only my second time to eat raw oysters.
And the first time I had ever eaten them with vodka.
Yes have had difficulty breathing- I take an antihystamine and have an epipen now - have not had alcoholfor12years
I also have been poisoned by a small cup of lobster bisque mixed with two glasses of red wine. The struggle is real
I have the same exact thing Gordon. Biggest issue for me now is going to restaurants where I don't know how the food is prepared. I usually tell them I have a shellfish allergy
The same thing happens to me. Alone shellfish are fine, but with alcohol my face and neck turn bright red and slight trouble catching my breathe.
You’re a dietitian and eating steak and crab legs with alcohol? I wouldn’t want you to be my dietitian. You should know better.
