really relieved to see that there are other people out there that feel like this, I thought I was crazy! I've been getting the bruised feeling for at least the past 10 years (28/f/caucasian). Oddly, this used to only happen the day after eating things like chinese food. I learned to stay away from things like chinese, thai or indian food, foods that are really sauce heavy, soups or anything with even a moderate amount of sodium. In the last three or so years I've been getting this feeling after drinking (waaaay too much), and in the last year or so it has been happening after only 2 or 3 drinks (LAME). At least in my case, I think it has something to do with water/sodium/potassium balances, but I could be way off. Has anyone found anything that helps stave off the bruise thing, or make it go away faster? Any idea what causes it?
again, I feel the same as the rest of you. I am always sore 2 days after i drink. I am really leaning towards a gluten or wheat allergy. I notice it gets worse when I drink beer, not to mention it does a number on my stomach. I really wish i knew that answer. I drank a few beers on sat. and I'm sore now on monday :-(
Hi guys,
I'm so glad to find this thread and I just wanted to share with all of you some information that I have recently come across. About 5 years ago (I'm now a 25 yr old f) I noticed a bruising feeling all over my chest, hips, and thighs the day after I drank. I connected it to alcohol, fatty foods, or not getting enough sleep (usually that all happens together since I order pizza or some food late night when I'm drunk, and don't sleep the same as I do without drinking.) I went to a Dr. about it and an allergist where they tested me for allerigies, Lyme disease, and shingles and no one could diagnose me. I know they thought I was crazy!
Fast forward a couple of years and I noticed an aching in my neck and shoulders immediately after I have a drink. I drink vodka soda but I have found it happens with all alcohol. I wrote it off as just a weird thing my body did until I read an article in Shape mag about a women who got the same pain after she drank (the pain happens right away and goes away n 30 mins or so.) Turns out, this woman was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphnodes. Once I did some research, I found that tenderness in the node sites (chest, neck, thighs) is another symptom of Hodgkins. I am d being tested and awaiting the results but I wanted everyone to be aware that it could be the cause of this tenderness everyone speaks of. Mine felt the exact way everyone is describing it on here. The aching after alcohol ingestion is very rare, but that is what tipped me off to the possibility of Hodgkins. Does anyone else on here feel that when they drink? I don't want to freak anyone out bc I haven't been diagnosed and surely there are other reasons for the tenderness but it is just such a weird symptom that nobody could ever tell me a reason for, that I wanted to share what I had found.
Hodgkins can often be asymptomatic or just have one symptom, so if any of you go to your dr., make sure you mention it to be on the safe side!

Hi there, i have been suffering with the same effects after drinking alcohol for about 8 years, it didn't matter how much i drunk; very little or lots, i would wake up in the morning and could hardly lift myself off my pillow as my whole body ached especially uner my arms, legs, neck, chest and shoulders. This feeling would last for several days after drinking alcohol and was as if someone had beaten me up, very sore and tender. All my family and friends have never expericed this before and always thought i was weird when i told them what i felt like the next day. I thought i was the only one that expericed this, i done some research into it on the internet and it always came up with lymphoma and hodgekins disease which i was really really worried about.
A few days ago i went for a food allergy and intolarance test as i also suffer from IBS and i was shocked to find out that i have a severe intolarance to all alcohol. The lady who tested me was very good and informed me that this would be the reason i always felt like i had been beaten up and so sore and tender after i drank no matter much how much it was. Your body is eliminating all the chemicals and toxins which are in the alcohol which your body cannot cope with. I was so glad to find out that it was an intolarance to alcohol and not something more serious. Obviously it is dissapointing that i cant drink alcohol without ever experiencing a hangover from hell and been in pain for days after but i am glad i know what it is now. I would suggest you all go and get intolarance testing done as i am pretty sure most of you will be suffering from an intolarance to alcohol like me as my symptons are the exact same as all of yours. and were very severe.
Would also like to say that i havn't had a drink in 6 weeks and i havn't had any of the aches and pains so i am 100% sure that it is the alcohol which causes the pain which i now know is due to an intolarance to alcohol. The lady also told me that it is quite rare to be intolarant to alcohol so that is why most people don't experience the pains that we all go through everytime we drink. I hope this information helps you all.

I am 30yo. caucasian male and have started to notice this bruised feeling on my ribs, chest, arms and back following a night of heavy drinking. I do not find it unbearable but figure I should think about cutting down as it could cause long-term problems for the body. I plan to talk with my doctor next visit. This thread was very reassuring. Thx.
im f/21 and noticed this today after drinking to much last night 8-| i hardly ever get hungover, but was quite ill last night. been feeling on and off all day but only noticed this bruised feeling as the day progressed. it starts in my jaw and goes down to my ribs with chest and collarbone hurting most. ive wondered for a while if i have a gluten or some other kind of intolerance as i do get bad stomach pain when eating and drinking certain things and feel tired and sluggish constantly but havent bothered with going to a doctor incase theres actually nothing wrong and they think im silly :-(
glad to know im not the only person with this bruised feeling but would be nice to get a definate answer %-)

Hopfully i will..
Hey i am only 21 and have recently come down with the same symptoms. Its extremely painful to even sit or touch my skin the dy ftr drinking heavily and its sarts around 4PM. The namefor this is ALCOHOL MYOPATHY and pretty uch the only way to fix it is to avoid drinking heavily as your body cannot metabolize all the alcohol you consume. It is potentially dangerous because the tendernss is causd by the alcohol attacking your muscles.
I looked up the disease an found an article of a man who is ony 38 and suffers prminantly from this muscle tendeness and physical weaknss from drinking too much when he as younger so STOP NOW! i drink heavily when i do drink and finding all thi out really freaked me out so im attempting to cut back severely as its the only real solution. GOODLUCK!

Wow I have pains the next morning after drinking across my chest my shoulders and my neck i thought i was just weak and others thought i was making it up but i couldnt be touched or bumped in these areas because it really hurt. so good to hear im not alone we all should research into this why has it started now that im older and hardly drink anymore. Maybe theres something in the alcahol that we react to cant be good i always have listened to my body its definately telling us somethings wrong time to give up the drink by the way do any of you also smoke?
I have the bruising feelings everytime now after i drink for the past 6months. Im so glad to have found you all. I have read over all your threads and there is alot of mixed thoughts and answers to what it could be. It maybe time to take this further for studies of medicine through a university. And i think we all should be tested and surveyed for the alcahol types, blood types, ages, backgrounds the works i dont want to pass this down to children if it can be prevented and as you all would agree i dont want to do further damage to my body. Will keep you posted and maybe look into creating a interactive site for all you suffering the same symptoms where we can keep up to date with each other.
This has been happening to me recently as well, I am only 28, I only drink beer, but I would say i drink at least 15 bottles a night when i go clubbing, My upper chest the next day and a little bit the day after that sore to the touch, I researched a lot cause i have neva experienced this b4 and found this forum, I thought maybe it could be swollen glands or lymph nodes? I only drink maybe once a week but maybe im getting 2 old and need 2 quit all together b4 i kill myself, I just wonder if many of you took drugs and drank heavily when you were young? Maybe that has something 2 do with it if thats the case, anyway I hope all of you find an answer to this and live healthy and happy lifes.
I have found that whenever I drink, I must take a potassium supplement as drinking depletes your potassium. Potassium is important for a proper functioning heart. If your potassium is low you may experience arrhythmias or palpitations and difficulty breathing. For me it is just a generalized discomfort in the chest. I think the dehydration part adds to this strange feeling that occurs in the chest. Google potassium and drinking and see what you think. Now go grab a big glass of water and take 2 potassium tablets!
Hello everyone,
I'm 23 female, started getting the same post-alcohol symptoms about 4 years ago after a nasty virus. Basically 24 hours after I got drunk it would feel like the virus had come back, then gradually I got it 24 hours after just 1 drink, until I started getting it all the time and gave up alcohol. I now have it 24/7 and my doctor diagnosed me with a condition called fibromyalgia. To be honest I'm not comfortable with this diagnosis because the only symptoms I have are a bruised feeling all over my body - particularly in my upper torso, upper arms, and sometimes along my jaw line. I'd advise all of you though to ask your doctor about it. No one really knows what causes fibromyalgia but it is correlated with low levels of certain vitamins, which are depleted by alcohol, so taking a good multivitamin is a really good idea.

I am a 26 year old caucasion female and I have also suffered from this condition for several years. I started drinking as frequently as I could when I was 18 and I would generally drink large amounts of alcohol every time I drank. It wasn't right away that I felt these symptoms but they definitely started somewhere within that first year of drinking. Also, it did happen quite frequently but there were also times when it didn't happen at all after drinking and when it did, it was sometimes more severe than other times. It was hard for me to determine if it was any specific type of alcohol (although I think it was just alcohol in general) and the only thing I knew for sure was the "sore skin" feeling could definitely be linked to a day after drinking. It really bothered me because I hated the feeling and no one I talked to had any idea what I was talking about or experiencing. I remember trying to look it up on the internet at that time but I pretty much concluded I must be the only one in the world who was having that problem because there was just absolutely no information anywhere. I asked my doctor who of course seemed puzzled and I'm pretty sure he just thought I was crazy because I otherwise seemed totally healthy.
Fast forward a few years and I am now 26 and will only drink on very rare occasions. I pretty much was over the binge drinking and party all night phase by the time I was 20-21. I felt better when I wasn't drinking and by no longer drinking I didn't ever have to worry about that sore skin feeling interfering with my day. When I stopped drinking I also stopped trying to figure out what the problem was which was easy to do since no one seemed to be able to help me anyway. However, what brings me here today is that all too familiar sore skin feeling once again. It was very sore yesterday and also has been all day today. I have had to push my puppy away from me when she wants to sit on my lap and walk over me like she normally does when I'm on the couch because suddenly it is just very painful even when she barely touches me with her paw. Something very important that I want to note is that I cannot even remember the last time I was drunk. I haven't had ANY alcohol whatsoever. And there is no doubt in my mind that this is that same exact feeling that I had before. Another interesting point is that these past few days I have had very little sleep...so it looks like this feeling can be linked with lack of sleep. Recently, I have been getting quite a bit of sleep so my body isn't used to being this tired at all. When I used to get this feeling after drinking I could also always link it with lack of sleep since obviously I had been up most of the night drinking. I am not trying to say it is actually lack of sleep rather than the alcohol that is causing this feeling because I am certain the feeling IS triggered by the alcohol. However, obviously it is not JUST the alcohol if I can still feel this way when I haven
