Adverse reaction to seafood and alcohol

JUST found the below info on another page, thought it might help.... The problem you are suffering from when combining certain seafoods and acohol is a toxic histamine reaction. Some people that have a shortage of, or an insufficient activity of the enzymes needed to deal with histamine in their bodies, can react badly, even violently to a meal of histamine-rich foods. These foods include certain seafoods (most usually shellfish), certain fungi / mushrooms, MSG, etc., etc. Worse yet, is the fact that this reaction can also occur with foods, food products, and /or spirts which promote an increase of histamine within the body. There are a number of these foods which can act to trigger a reaction and these trigger foods vary from person to person. The most common trigger appears to be alcohol. The “why” to all this is the fact that histamine is a critical matabolite and neurotransmitter which activates to defend against foreign cell matter in our bodies. The trigger foods cause the body to release potentially dangerous and even dangerous amounts of histamine. Also, alcohol and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase are important to dealing with the amounts of histamines in our bodies. So alcohol, especially in people that lack the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, causes these people to be particularly susceptable to a reaction since drinking alcoholic spirits stimulates the prodution of histamine in the body.Charlie D. / Computerguy February 10, 2013 at 3:52 PM- See more at: http://www.momanthology.com/2011/10/death-by-alcohol-and-seafood.html#sthash.NPV9cR97.dpuf

yes, that is an interesting connection!
I have read some of the post trying to figure out what is going on with me I love seafood whether it’s from saltwater or freshwater and I have never gotten sick I also drink alcohol and if I am out to eat most generally I have had some sort of drink mostly beer. I am now 55 and have never had problems or issues. But with in the last four months I haven’t gotten extremely sick from eating fish the most recent fish or salmon. Prior to that on another night out I had just fish and chips which is deep fried fish a little bit of lobster just a bite actually from my sister-in-law and we had some deep fried oysters which everybody shared. But on those two occasions food appeared to be great with no problem but it only took approximately two hours and I was sicker than a dog vomiting and diarrhea terribly. So I wonder if something in my body chemistry has changed that alcohol in seafood combine make me extremely sick. After I recover from that generally at night the next day I don’t feel any side effects. Any thoughts.
Yes i had experience this one, i feel dizzy
I ate shellfish and had one glass of wine, then 3 hours later I had diarrhea, and 2 hours after that I was vomiting and had severe pain in my right side, just below my ribs. I felt like I was gonna pass out, but never got a headache. The pain lasted nearly 4 hours and the vomiting on and off. This was the second time this has happened to me. Am I the only one getting the severe pain with this?
It's happened to me 3 times now, each worse than the former. Deathly ill, all of the food poisoning symptoms. I don't mix the two under sny circumstances.
I too have a reaction to mixing alcohol with shellfish! I wake up the next morning with swollen eyes. I have seen an allergist and been tested for shellfish allergies and it was negative. My doctor then asked me about drinking alcohol with my shellfish and there is a definite correlation. I know this because if I eat shellfish without drinking alcohol my eyes do not get swollen!
I thought I was crazy! A few weeks ago, I went to a distillery, had a few drinks then went to eat crab legs after and I felt extremely sick. My stomach was churning. Sitting on the toilet I felt so nauseous and fatigue. The next day I completely lost my appetite and felt so sick. The only think that made me feel a little better was drinking ginger ale and taking a gas pill. Then on Friday I had some crab legs and had 3 glasses of wine. I felt the wine a little more than regular. The next morning when I woke up super early, and my stomach was churning. My head was hurting as if I was hungover. Once again I felt so fatigue and depleted. I lost my appetite again. It’s now Sunday and I still feel a little sick. I’ve had diarrhea since yesterday.

Last night I had a few beers with a seafood platter at 8pm, followed by a little Jameson Irish whiskey. Woke up at 2a.m splitting headache, stomache ache, vomiting almost like i was poisoned. Noone else got sick and noone else was drinking!

I haven't seen anyone else with the same reaction as mine yet; I get terrible joint inflammation. I have been getting terrible join inflammation that feels like fire at night time after drinking ever since I can remember, I just didn't know why because it was very random and never consistent. Last year during sheltering in place, we drank like fish for 4 months and I never once got inflammation. All of a sudden when the Holidays started in late Nov I started getting inflammations again. Fed up this time, I started a food/drink log in Feb 2021 thinking it's a certain type of alcohol causing my reactions. I noticed all 3 days I had reactions I actually consumed some type of seafood while drinking alcohol. I remember that I did start eating seafood again during the Holidays. And now I'm here looking for answers but nobody seems to have the same reaction as me. I have been drinking all sorts of alcohol since the last inflammation but never with seafood (unintentionally) and no inflammation. I have no problems drinking alcohol or eating seafood separate from one another. The trigger seafoods in my log were shrimp and calamari. Also to note, I am Asian but I have a decent alcohol tolerance and I do not get "Asian glow."
I am mostly a vegetarian but occasionally go through pescatarian phases with no adverse reaction to fish on its own (usually with no alcohol or maybe a glass). 10 years ago I ate salmon and went out with my friend. That night is now, not so fondly remembered as “the night of the salmon”. I completely blacked out and threw up for 24 hours. Although most friends don’t believe me or skeptically believed me when I said it was the salmon but aired on the belief I just drank wayyyyyy too much. Then cut to 10 years later (2 days ago) at my cousin’s 4th of July BBQ, ate some tuna (the whole salmon scenario crossed my mind after such a violent reaction but brushed it off) I had 3 glasses of wine and 1 cocktail. Enough to get me tipsy but not raging drunk. A few hours later was on all fours with the room spinning, blacked out and was told I threw up a lot. I tried to tell them it was the combo and again they were like “sure, we’ve all been there” ... annnnnd pretty much everyone was skeptical once again when I say it was the combo... but obviously I have found you people and you’ve all been there! but weird thing is I wasn’t hung over the next day probably after the whole reaction subsided in me. It must be the combo!
Could be a histamine intolerance. Lime cooked food (like ceveche or shrimp cocktail) alcohol (especially red wine) and tomato(like a seafood soup) are super high histamine combo. I will get sick everytime if I combine them. Sulfites may be the culprits too if the restaurant has preservatives in their seafood, combined with wine or any other food or beverage with sulfites. Bad overload.
This happened to me thrice. First time I had shrimps with bloody marry, what started as a little throat irritation led to nose block and light fever. Second time it was only shrimp no alcohol, got an painfull lump in my arm pit. During the third time I again had shrimps and some coctails, it led to a painful lymph node behind my ears. After third time I realised what my problem was that I have allergies to shell food and alcohol.
Hey all.. I'm in the same boat. I have eaten shrimp for years with no issues but on 2 occasions I mixed a shrimp dinner with a couple beers and had violent vomiting and diarrhea 2-4 hours after consumption. Initially I of course thought it was bad shrimp and even called the restaurant and told them I had food poisoning. After the second attempt at the same dinner a year later, same result. No more combining shrimp and alcohol for me!
