Red, itchy blotches on body after showering

As soon as I step out of the shower, all these little red bumps and blotches appear on by upper body, especially my upper chest. These bumps are really itchy and cover my arms, chest, and back. I have no idea what is causing this. I have tried switching different shampoos and body washes, thinking I can rule different things out. I have tried no scent shampoos and sensitive skin body wash. What is wrong with me??!!??!!

Thank you for a great comment. I definitely agree, it is certainly not just a heat rash. I have this issue often. I've seen several doctors (for this among other things). What I've learned is that hot water opens up the pores, and toxins come out. If you have what is called a "toxic overload", this can cause rashes and welts at varying degrees. As you mentioned, candidiasis can certainly be a cause of this, among many other conditions. I have a gene mutation (MTHFR), and that means my body doesn't rid toxins as it should. I also very much agree with getting opinions from doctors until you feel like you are getting properly diagnosed. That is so important!
Probiotics are one great way to restore the healthy bacteria in the body. This is really an issue that could be caused by so many things, and it could be minor or more serious. It should always be evaluated and not overlooked. Also, it's always best to err on the side of caution! :)
This is not always an issue of dehydration. Dehydration can cause many symptoms, but I'm positive that all of these people having this issue are not dehydrated. If you are having these symptoms, please seek medical advice. Drinking plenty of water is definitely a good idea, but most likely won't rid these symptoms.

Aquagenic Urticaria is quite rare, and happens anytime a person comes in contact with water. Many of the people here seem to have this issue after a shower, which indicates warm or hot water. You most likely do not have this disease, and should see a doctor or dermatologist if possible. I understand the frustration. I dread taking showers due to my skin issues that arise afterwards, and so I space mine out as well. Hope you're feeling better. Take care of yourself! :)

Just stumbled on this thread looking for something else, and thought I'd throw my two cents in because I have been successful in treating mine. It is urticaria, however the type/cause is dependant on your own body chemistry. My hives post shower is a histamine response to a rise in body temperature. Yes. I am allergic to heat. I also get it when I'm outside (I live in Texas), am embarrassed (which certainly does not help the embarrassment), or just sitting on the couch and the ambient temperature changes (my trigger temp is whenever the thermostat hits 72 degrees, oddly enough). It goes away shortly after moving to a cooler environment or calming down.
A daily antihistamine was the treatment. A 12-24 hr OTC like Allegra works to keep it fairly minimal, but my doctor prescribed an antihistamine that prevented it completely.
I have since run out of the prescription about a year ago, so I've been doing the OTC as needed. About two weeks ago I got a terrible upper respiratory infection, so I've been drinking a ton of tea as well as daily apple cider vinegar/honey "tea", and noticed today that I hadn't needed to take my Allegra at all since I have been doing so. Almost certainly a hot beverage would have (and has historically) trigger my urticaria.
I have also upped the probiotics/super digestive enzymes for digestive issues around the same time, so the reduction in symptoms could be due to that, or a combination of all (ACV also has enzymes that are great for the gut). I eat garbage, and drink. Pretty much everything they say to avoid when you're trying to reduce inflammation in the gut, is my diet. The digestive enzymes has definitely helped in that regard, and I know there is a histamine response to digestive issues such as "leaky gut". Anyway, I digress.
TL;DR to control symptoms get a prescription strength antihistamine if possible. If not, take a 12-24hr non drowsy OTC (Allegra worked best, here). Consider probiotics and super digestive enzymes to cure (especially if you are also having bowel issues).
Good luck!
This has been happening to me for a year now and I think it's the hot water because I have the shower quite hot to enjoy it but I get these red blotches all over my upper chest, neck and back. I've tried putting the shower a bit colder and it does seem to help very well. It's hard to get used to having cold shower so I'd recommend to put it a bit colder everytime to get used to. Oh and also I just had a run and I took my shirt off and there was a few red blotches on my body, so any type of water could be the problem
Could it be bed bugs bites my grandaughter never has bites comes home from mom s ouse and has no bites put her in the bath the all show up HELP PLEASE
I have had problems with hives/tiny red spots and itching for over 25 years. I'd develop them when going from cold to hot, cool to warm, during my sleep, at work when near heat, and at work when in cold conditions. I'd also develop them while just sitting around doing nothing. I too looked at changes in laundry detergents , soaps, starch in clothing, and foods I ate. The itching and hives and little red spots didn't aways appear during my exposure to the same things which had caused the break out in the past. I had noticed they would appear if I did any kind of physical exercising . Over time, I started to see a pattern of when, I would break out. I informed the doctors of all this,,but, of course all tesing came back negative. It took many trips to several doctors before one finally came up with meds. that helped me control the itch. Lucky for me, that doctor was called away for a few minutes as she was getting information from me. The conversations had been going like the others. I thought for sure she was going to say the same as the others. I think they didn't believe what I had told them, and because the sympthoms didn't occur while I was in the office,,I couldn't really blame them. BUT, while the doctor was called away and I was sitting there stewing, and remembered that sometimes, sometimes I'd get the hives and stuff when I'd take my young daughter for bike rides. SO, right there in the office, I stated doing pushups and sit-ups and jumping jacks. Sure enough, I started getting little pinching and itching sensations on my arms, chest, stomach, back and legs. By the time she got back, I could see the red spots, which were normally how the hives started,,and I was itching like crazy. She looked at them, said something like : oh, you have this or that,,we can control it with this. She gave me a perscription for Atarax.......Atarax will not stop the hives/little red spots,,but it does prevent me from itching. I started by taking 2,10mg pills four times a day. I still break out from time to time, mostly when I haven't taken the required amount and it's a hot day and I'm outside doing some honey project or BBQ'ing. The break out always starts with the itching......Oh, about 3 years ago a new doctor had me go see another allergy specialist. The specialist suggested I try over the counter antihistmes. I was up to 12 pills a day, having started at a lower dose, as suggested, and increasing if necessary. They didn't work !!!,,,I suffered for over a period of 7 days on and off, with the itching and little red spots. I finally called both my doctor and the specialist and told them I was done with their experiment and was going back to the tried and proven Atarax.
Try googling Granuloma Annulare it's horrible and no cure nothing helps. I'm having a skin biopsy tomorrow
Logical and sound advice. Better than most GP's unfortunately.....
Im actually going to try this. Ill let you know if it works. It makes very much sence
Where are the pictures you posted? My son gets dry red blotchy patches on his face after showering. I am just interested in comparing. Thank yoj
Its because of dry skin problems. Try moistorizer that should help it
Try moistorizer it should help. Dry skin is common even when you dont think you have dry skin. It is most common during cold weather, dry conditions, or you dont have enough vitamins in your body. It's not the shampoo, conditioner, or the body soap that you use (unless you are allergic to some ingredients, or chemicals they put in there)*. I have the same symptoms you guys are having; Red spots on the skin; itchiness; rashes; etc. I tried some moistorizer and it actually helped with the symptoms i was having. Hope this helps :)
I started having the same issue a few months ago. After every shower I would develop these welt size bumps but only on my thighs. I switched shampoos and soaps , went sulfate free, etc and nothing helped . Just recently started noticing them when i woke up, still only on my thighs . 3 days ago I was getting ready to shower and my neck was itching, I looked in the mirror and my neck and chest was covered! First time it has ever spread on my body. They always go away tho after a few minutes to a few hours. Well tonight I took a shower and when I got out my thighs , both my sides and under my right armpit was covered in them!!! It is getting worse. My grandmother is a nurse at the VA hospital and she thinks it is hives. They are brought on by heat and stress can bring them on too but don't know for sure if that is what is going on. I am making an appointment with a dermatologist tomorrow morning. I don't understand what is going on.
